The Boys from Biloxi: A Legal Thriller

Sometimes the plot unfolds as the reader anticipated, other times Grisham throws a curve ball that is the opposite of what the reader expected. Graham never fails to keep the reader excited for the next page!

This book is so good! I’m a huge John Grisham fan and have read most of his books. My only disappointment is the poor quality of the printing. The print is light and varies from page to page and the font is very small. I feel that an author of John Grisham’s caliber deserves better.

A book about right and wrong about the values of upbringing and how two friends brought up in different ways and different paths.

This was a long ride to the end,which I found surprising in some regards. I had my own idea of how it might end, and I wasn't even close. I did like learning about some of the legal system,good and bad.

Another well-done book by Grisham although not quite his normal writing style. Told as if someone was just telling the story with some dips into an individuals frame of mind. It was a good story.

I haven’t read John Grisham in numerous years. I was interested to see what he was up to. I enjoyed the story line & wonder how much is based on facts. Very descriptive I miss more conversational writing. Enjoyable read.

This was solid 4 stars for me, I felt the 1st third (Hugh and Keith's youth and childhood) was draggy, but picked up during Jesse's career anc definitely after the big twist halfway through or so. I have family from Mississippi and lived there briefly myself years ago, so even though it felt like this one could have been tighter, every Grisham novel feels humid and real- never as slow as the surface might present. I enjoyed these characters, families, and ending.

The novel had slow start and it took over half the story to get interesting but enjoyed it after that.

Maybe I'm just impatient, bit there are too many stories in parallel that add little to the main one... Nevertheless, it is a very good book, with a engaging main line...

der roman beginnt in einem langsamen tempo. zu anfang wird die geschichte der einwanderergeneration erzählt, dann parallel die geschichte der zwei enkelsöhne hugh malco und keith rudy sowie die ihrer väter: jesse rudy, studiert neben der arbeit jura und schafft es bis zum anwalt, während der vater von hugh eine kriminelle karriere beginnt und mit alkohol, glücksspiel und prostitution ein vermögen anhäuft. beide söhne folgen ihren vätern bis die ehemaligen freunde in einem bitteren showdown aufeinander treffen.grisham erzählt oft in der form des berichts, mit wenigen szenen und dialogen. dadurch ist die erzählweise sehr gedrängt. die atmosphäre der 50er bis 70er jahre weiss er gut zu schildern.ich hatte schwierigkeiten beim einstieg es hat mir zu lange gedauert, bis wirklich etwas passierte. doch die absicht des autors war wohl nicht, einen schnellen, spannenden thriller zu schreiben, sondern die entwicklung zweier charaktere in ihren jeweiligen umständen darzustellen. das ist gelungen.hugh, der mobster, wird am ende von keith, dem staatsanwalt, zur todesstrafe verurteilt. in einer anrührenden schlussszene sitzen sich die zwei vor der gaskammer gegenüber und es wird zweifel an der todesstrafe gesät. der autor john grisham ist gegen die todesstrafe und hat die todesstrafe in mindestens zwei romanen thematisiert.

1920年代初頭から1980年代、クロアチアからの移民を祖先にもつ2家族が、ミシシッピー州 Biloxi というメキシコ湾沿いの町で繰り広げる物語。当初の町は美しい自然に恵まれた漁業や観光地であるとともに、禁酒時代の網を潜り抜けて様々な暗黒面（飲酒はもちろんのこと、ギャンブル、売春、暴力、契約殺人まで）が蔓延っている。本書はこの町のダークな面をなんとか一掃したいと奮闘する正義の一家と、あらゆる手段を講じて不法な利益と支配を追求する一家の、親子二代にわたる挌闘を描いている。一方は弁護士、地区検事、一方はギャング、マフィア。それぞれの家の2人の少年は、幼馴染で、野球チームに所属し、親しく良き子ども時代を過ごすのだが、社会問題が悪化するにつれて、それぞれの親の影響も受けて、全く正反対の人生を歩むことになる。当時のアメリカ社会の問題を、様々な人間関係を構築して、克明に描き出している点は興味深かった。司法のありかたも、著者ならではの姿勢で展開し、日本のそれとは違う面も、今まで読んだほかの作品とも共通して、詳細に理解できた。しかし従来の作品とはいささか趣が異なっていて、劇的な展開も含まれてはいるものの、それぞれの家族が交互に語られる形式で、総じて比較的淡々と述べられている感じだった。実態はよくわかるが、二人の少年が成長していくにつれて、お互いに対してどのように変化していくのかについては、多くを語られず、物足りない感じがした。最後に、結末の部分で、二人が交わすことばと、その奥に窺える心情には、胸に迫る余韻があった。
