Many years ago a chef i worked with put a knife through his hand trying to prepare oysters and ever since i've steered clear of them in fear of doing the same.But last year the Mrs and I had some oysters at a restaurant and we were keen to eat them again so i very carefully picked some up from the fish counter at our local supermarket and i then VERY carefully used a small kitchen knife to pry them open and free them from the shell. They were delicous, but a typical home kitchen knife is too sharp and not sturdy enough to lever the shells open and scrape the shell. So i decided to pick these up.I got a set of 2 and chose the yellow handles. It's not a glamorous job preparing oysters so i wanted something sturdy that i could instantly recognise and a yellow handle is very recognisable. The handles are plastic with good grip, but sturdy and the slight hand guard is good for protecting your hand from slipping or getting sliced on the shell. The thickness of the metal is great. It's a strong blade so you can easily lever the shell open without the blade bending or slipping. The curved edge allows easy freeing of the oyster from the shell.If you do find the shell is clamped shut and you can't get a lever point drop the offending oyster into a bucket of cold water and it will soon loosen up and give you another chance.The included gloves were a bit of a strange fit and remembering the chef at the beginning, the 1st thing i did was stab the glove with a fork and it punctured it. These gloves have good slice protection but not stab. So will be good when handling sharp oyster shells.This is a Good set and will definitely last us through a few years of oysters.
