This Means This, This Means That: A User's Guide to Semiotics

Sean Hall did a good job of choosing images for the book's content. Every other page has a good quality image on it & I was very surprised at how well made this book is. The pages are thick and sturdy, with a nice finish. There are new vocab words to learn nearly every other page. It's full of useful information, especially for anyone writing about semiotics.

This book is the best book currently on the market for ease for use and design clarity. It is well designed and the graphic layout is strong and facilitates ease of read in concert with pertinent images.

I have several books on the subject and this is one of the better ones. I am always suspicious when philosophy and critical theory is written in a manner that seems more bent upon obfuscation than clarity. This publication goes out of its way to help the reader understand its many 'squishy' ideas and examples. It is likely that the readers will still have many questions after finishing this book, but they will certainly have a much stronger foundation as well.

The first part which is the theory approach of the book it's a little short. But the examples are illustrative and very good. I think is a great book for those who try to understand visual semiotics without all the boring intellectual and sociological part.

Learned so much reading this book and applying it to my identity design class.

When I was briefed that I had to write about semiotics as part of the Visual Communication module of my photography HNC, I was lost until I found this book. Its brilliant. It provided me with all the information and understanding I needed to get a grasp of hidden meanings and codes in imagery. I'm now looking to find and create them all the time. I have seen books before written by senior university lecturers, written in a language that is enough to send you to sleep after a couple of pages, but this book is not one of those. It flows, it is interesting, it is entertaining and you want to turn the page. I highly recommend it.

This book has broaden my mind towards the concept of why are we understanding the way we do. I feel it will help understand design much better.
