Waste of money
Product does not work. Well within range of a Pyrenees and facing directly at dog, yards away, but continue to bark incessantly. Gave it a couple of months and now cannot return the device. Waste of money. It activates for cars driving by or loud noises but not a nearby dog, even on high sensitivity. These things don’t actually detect barking, just any noise.

Very effective when used judiciously
We bought this to address our neighbor's dog's nuisance barking and we were surprised to find it works quite well. Under ideal circumstances, that is. What's most important to keep in mind is that it may take a week or so to see meaningful results, because it may take certain dogs that long to learn that their barking is triggering the feedback they receive from the device. If you’re patient, you will almost certainly see results. Having said that, we've learned that no matter what, there's nothing that will prevent a dog's instinctual barking. So when our neighbor lets her dogs outside to do their business (between 5am and 7am daily!), they can't resist barking at the first person, dog, cat, bird, squirrel, rabbit, deer, etc they see off in the distance. What we've found is that the the length of time barking gradually decreases over the training period. So expect that most dogs will bark for a few seconds before they trigger the device. After they've received enough feedback, they will usually stop barking until they are called back inside. Learning where to best place the device (so that it wouldn't be blocked by trees or a fence or any other solid objects) involved some trial and error. But once we found the sweet spot, the device has consistently worked quite well. Another thing we learned is that adjusting the sensitivity dial is helpful to avoid the device being triggered by sounds from the environment other than the dog’s barking. Basically, you don’t want the sensitivity dialed up so high that the sounds of people talking, birds calling or insects chirping, etc are constantly triggering the device at the same time you’re trying to train the dogs to resist the instinct to bark. The less ambient noise there is (especially during the learning period), the more quickly dogs will learn that their barking is what’s triggering the device. For convenience and to guarantee reliable feedback from the device, I recommend using the included power adapter whenever there’s easy access to an electrical outlet. Batteries (6AA are required, if you choose to site this where no electrical outlet is available) work well but depending on weather conditions, they only last for about a month. Those who have no way to position the device in the line of sight of the dog, should not despair. This review has been updated to reflect my realization that the remote can trigger the device from indoors (through walls) and from a considerable distance (up to 75 feet, according to product literature). You may not have good results using the device passively but using the remote works surprisingly well, we’ve found. I was initially skeptical that dogs barking from some distance away would respond to my triggering the device with the remote control. But, to my pleasant surprise, it's been very effective (in some cases even more effective) at quieting dogs than using the device passively. The key to using the remote is patience. In my experience, dogs learn more quickly when the device is triggered immediately after they bark (as opposed to being randomly triggered). If a dog is barking rapidly for several seconds at a time, I think it’s a good idea to wait until there’s a pause (even a brief one) before triggering the device again. There is a dog a half a block away from us that was really really stubborn (at first, I thought it might have been hard of hearing) and would just yap away non stop for ten to twenty seconds at a time. Eventually, the aforementioned approach (waiting until there was even a brief pause) ultimately worked. It still barks like crazy when first let outside but it now stops barking after we trigger the device 2-3 times.According to the product literature, the device won’t transmit sound through walls or other solid objects like a fence. So it’s highly unlikely to work on that dog inside the house next door or the apartment across the hall or upstairs. Overall, I highly recommend this but with the caveat that if the device isn't placed somewhere where it can "see" the offending dog, it won't work. OTOH, we *have* had some success quieting dogs inside of homes if a window or door where they live has been left open. Again, this hasn't prevented barking entirely but it has consistently worked to reduce barking significantly.EDIT: I continue to update this review as I learn which tweaks do and don't work. So I've recently noticed that a dog tends to stop barking much sooner if it's alone or if it’s the only dog barking among companion dogs nearby. I suspect that's because when two or more dogs are barking simultaneously, it takes longer for each individual dog to realize it is triggering the device. I’ve also noticed that it takes longer for a nearby senior dog to react to feedback from the device. In a situation where a dog’s hearing is impaired, it may be necessary to move your device closer to where that dog is located. The key is to be patient and to trigger the device judiciously so the dog more quickly learns that it is triggering the device.

Malfunctions
This item malfunctioned. It seemed to be working intermittently, mostly when I set it off by remote control. But one night it went off and wouldn't stop. I had it set on audible so I could tell when it was working and when it was not. I had to hike up the hill in the dark to stop it from making that irritating sound and I'm sure my neighbors could see me. So embarrassing!

BUYER BEWARE! Ineffective!!!
Complete and utter garbage! Does not do what it claims and for $150, it absolutely should. Back story...neighbors dogs on the other side of the fence get triggered at the slightest noise and continually bark at all hours of the day and night. Fence is 6', I mounted device about 9' on my Tuff Shed to clear fence and have line of sight to the fence at the front of their yard, approx 75' away. While in test mode, the device seems to p/u the barking sound, but has no affect on them. Interesting side note, while I was testing this thing, I could actually p/u the high pitched noise emitting from the device. It definitely pierced my ear and it was painful. I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to hear it and thus suspect it really isn't an Ultrasonic device. I left it up for a couple of weeks just to see if things would change and they didn't. Returned for refund!

Didn’t work for me
Didn’t work for me. I was hoping for good results and made sure I was within 75 feet of the neighbors dogs. Left it out there for several weeks and nothing. I even use the remote control when they started barking but they didn’t even notice it.

Works great, but room for improvement.
I have this unit in a pseudo bird house to protect it (especially the batteries) from the weather and from prying eyes. It is behind a large “window” of black screen to allow the sound out as unimpeeded as possible. I have found that our wind chimes trigger the unit. To solve this problem, I have turned the microphone all the way down (it would nice if it had an “off” setting just to be sure). I then use the remote to trigger the unit.To make sure the the unit is triggering, I set it on audio. However, it would be very convenient (and perhaps help the batteries to last longer) to be able to turn audio mode on and off using the remote. That way, I could conveniently check to see if the unit was still working without having the sound on all the time.

Limited time
It seemed to work, after 5 months [plugged in] it stopped, but after I unplugged, flipped switches and checked battery [preparing a warranty claim], and reassembled it, IT WORKED FINE.[edited]

Does NOT work
Product does not work at all! Well within range of dogs and facing directly at them. All of them continue to bark incessantly. Gave it a couple of months for the dogs to figure it out and now cannot return the device. Waste of money.
