quite pricey, but very nice
Have you had cockles before? They are teeny tiny little clams that give food, specially a pasta or paella dish, a clean, briny seafood flavor and bits of meaty chewiness to bite into. I purchased these cockles to add to my paella, and I really enjoyed them. Though I do give myself quite the task by choosing to clean them, and they are very tiny little clams to begin with, I found them relatively easy to clean once I got the hang of it (that dark, oval bump on the end is exactly what you think it is--do you really want to eat that?). Though my paella was full of wonderful bites of interesting seafood throughout (octopus, squid, shrimp..), these tiny clams were one of my favorite bits about the meal, as they dotted my rice with that little something extra that was chewy and briny, and gave every bite a clean taste of the sea. Of all of my ingredients, these were actually the most expensive, so I know I will not be enjoying this meal as often as I would like to, but I will save my pennies and add a couple of cans to my orders when I can. If you enjoy clams and have something special in mind, I recommend trying these (just maybe wait until the price drops a bit).
