Up the Hill Backwards
Steiner dives right in to Bowie's chaotic, noisy and disturbing album, revealing its lyical, musical and biographical secrets in readable, lucid prose. Brilliantly readable, superbly in-depth, he navigates by theme and association to shed a light on this elusive masterpiece.

Catnip for Bowie fans
This book is absolutely marvellous for any die hard Bowie fan. There is a level of analysis that you simply dont get in many other pop music books. The attention to detail and level of examination is second to none and the actual subject matter of Scary Monsters really lends itself to inquiry. Bowie liked to leave things unexplained and that leaves so much room to discuss meaning and influences. Highly recommended.

Takes you there
Great insights in a book which weaves this terrific LP into its time. Highly recommended not just for Bowie fans but for anyone interested in that explosive early 80s period.

Good synthesis of available material with some good insights
A good subject for an in-depth analysis, but this is a bit parocial. The parts where the author tries to overlay his right-on political colour onto the reality of Britain, the USA, and the world as it was in 1980 are cringeworthy and superficial. One comes away wanting the hear Scary Monsters again, which is as it should be, but feeling that a bit of tightening and editing would have served the subject better.
