As singer L. Gabrielle Penabaz puts it, "each culture provides another magnifying glass by which to inspect the world and find it amusing." Aided and abetted by her partners-in-crime -- guitarist Brian Gocher and producer Nayan Lassiter -- Penabaz now shares those observations with the rest of the planet on Eccentrica Gallumbits, Fuelnine's debut EP. The resulting 9 song disk arcs across a wide range of moods and sounds, from the dark allure of "Vertigo" ("the chorus lyric -- ' where there are humans, there are flies and buddhas' -- is an old Zen Buddhist saying," notes Penabaz), to "Carnival Of Everything," a dreamy paean to "experiencing life at its fullest, without holding back." "Revolution Blues," the debut single from Eccentrica Gallumbits, epitomizes Fuelnine's approach. It seduces the listener with ever-changing guitar, hip-hop drums, and vocal passion; but upon closer inspection, "Revolution Blues" reveals bittersweet, disturbing thematic currents which run deep beneath its shimmering surface. "Actually, it's a love song," says Penabaz. "A run-away-with-your-lover and escape-the-chaos-of-this-miserable-world kind of love song. I'm not really a romantic person. That's why I have to write about guns and stuff -- it helps me to focus." Fuelnine was born six years ago as a collaboration between Penabaz and Gocher. Working in Gocher's studio, the pair began weaving the basic fabric of Fuelnine's sound. In 1995, producer Nayan Lassiter joined in the picture, adding a cohesiveness to Fuelnine's music, while retaining its unpredictable edge. The group chose the name Fuelnine to conjure a mood of its own. "I liked the idea of using fuel in the name," says Penabaz. "Fuel can mean so many different things -- love, chocolate, good shoes, gasoline -- whatever it is that moves you." Released independently, by Vinylla Records in 1997, Eccentrica Gallumbits affords the band the opportunity to play out live and expose their unique brand of music to a global audience.
