Velux Ztk014 Blackout Shade for 14" Sun Tunnel, White

We ordered this shade because the solar sun tunnel, positioned directly over our couch, mimicked a stage spotlight. It was uncomfortably glaring on sunny days. Once we easily positioned the Velux Blackout Shade over the opening, we were shocked and happily amazed at how much light it blocked. Do not let the picture, or opaqueness of the material, fool you. This shade seriously blocks out the light. You will not be disappointed.

First we have a newer Velux Sun Tunnel with a flexible reflective housing so we couldn't install the electronic damper daylight controller which would have been our first choice. I failed to research this enough and didn't realize the following before I received the shade:1) The blackout shade is designed for an older model of sun tunnel. The instructions seem to indicate that the magnets should be installed on the ceiling side of your tunnel flange. However the model we have fits flush with the ceiling so there is no way this will work. We ended up not using the magnets provided (would have looked ugly) and gluing (contact cement) some round neodymium magnets on the room side of our flange. This worked fine but was a pain and disappointing for 80+ dollars. Also the small magnets are visible when the shade is not on.2) The blackout shade doesn't block out all of the light on our newer model flange so when its used it looks like a sun-tunnel solar eclipse.3) You can buy this else where for about 1/2 the price4) The materials are cheap..think ikea plastic.

My house is pretty different in that the main living space doesn’t have windows, it has several solar tubs. I bought one of these covers to make sure it worked and I love it! They’re so easy to put up and take down. I get migraines with light sensitivity and these are pretty black out perfect. I totally suggest these for anyone needing to cover their solar tubes.

Magnets aren't strong enough to hold the shade up. I guess I'll try and find stronger ones.

We installed our sun tunnel in our very dark bedroom and were really happy... till mornings! I was so happy to see that they'd thought of this issue and prepared for it! This is well designed and works great. It's very lightweight so it's fairly easy to get it to apply with the wand that's provided. The magnets are just strong enough to hold the disk up on the sun tunnel surface but will still release when you "remove" it with the little connector on the wand. You do need to barely set the disk on the wand connector so it doesn't engage or get locked into it or it won't release and stay put on the magnets. Just use a light hand and this works perfectly, on and off.
