St John deserves more recognition as one of the greats. Frank Frazetta copied his work regularly as he was asked to by the publishers.Its a good fun book to peruse.

I liked the book all around for reference purposes and delight. The problem I had was with delivery. The book was put in a bag, not A box. The book was bent, damaged and shoved into mailbox. I was compelled to return it.

You will be struck withawe and fascination the first time your eyes touch each pageof this book as you are drawn into a different time and adifferent place. The book selected paintings that illustrated the depth andvariety of J. Allen St. John a reflection of a lifetime of hiswork as well as a legacy of an artist that will live on. The Paintings of J. Allen St. John: the Grand Master of Fantasylives up to its title. A worthy addition to your art library.

I see why Edgar Rice Burroughs thought St. John was the best artist doing covers for hisvarious stories. St. John was the "grand daddy" of all fantasy artists and everyone afterhim owes him a debt. Frazetta, Jones, Finaly, Krenkle, Brundage all were influence byhim one way or another. My only complaint is----I wish there were more artwork ! Don'tget me wrong---there is a lot to look at----I just wish there was more.

The media could not be loaded.  A nice tribute to J. Allen St. John, a fantasy artist who inspired other generations of artists. There are over 170 paintings, featuring works for Tarzan, John Carter, covers for magazines and many more.The paintings are nicely composed, filled with adventure and action. Simply the best examples of fantasy illustration back then. It's easy to see why so many artists are drawn to them, including Frank Frazetta who's clearly influenced by his art.There are also good essays and interesting quotes throughout the book, to let us get a glimpse of his life and career.Nice book recommended to fantasy artists.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. A fantastic book with excellent reproductions of St. John's work. I enjoyed the overview of his life and career, as well as the appreciations of his work from other artists.

This vol is full of Terrific art. The pulp covers are a revelation of this artists great talent.It is the examples of the covers for Amazing Stories and Fantastic Adventures that have me seeking out these issues to add to the handfull that I already have.Highly recommend this book to all who love pulp art.

Great selection of J Allen St John's color works. Present quite well.

ein toller Querschnitt zu dem Werk von James Allen St John. Besonders an diesem Buch ist hervorzuheben, dass viele seiner Cover im Detail vergrößert abgebildet sind. So kann man gut seinen Zeichenstil erkennen und analysieren.Bekannt wurde er durch seine Illustrationen von Edgar Rice Burroughs. Obwohl das nur ein kleiner Teil seines Schaffens ist, er war auch Autor und Dozent. Hier sieht man Bilder aus seiner Jugend als Künstler, und natürlich die vielen Pulp-Cover aus dem "Golden Age der Illustration".
