DC Comics Bombshells 5: The Death of Illusion

Bombshells Bounces Back from the Weak Previous Volume for an Absolute Triumph as the Actions Shifts to Russia
After the last volume of Bombshells was a bit of a boring filler arc it is great to see Bennett and the rest of her creative team bounce back with this awesome penultimate volume. The Bombshells story is coming to a close in the next book (though there is a spin off series coming out now too) and this volume sees some of the last pieces falling into place. The title of this volume is "The Death of Illusion" and the stories inside are very much about characters on the sidelines of the Bombshells universe's take on WW2 having to throw away their preconceived notions and decide who they really are and what they will do to help the ones they love. As with many of the other volumes of the series, this book focuses mainly on a select few characters out of the larger cast: Poison Ivy, Raven,Lois Lane, Batgirl, and Supergirl. The Batgirl issue is fun enough and finally introduces a variation of Barbara Gordon to the Bombshells-verse instead of spending time on the so-called Batgirls of Gotham (a team of young women who beat people up with baseball bats). Personally I was glad we didn't get another check-in with the Batgirls this time as their home-front based stories never mesh with the broader narrative that well. Even better, Lois Lane and the Reaper have finally left Gotham and joined the broader Bombshells story as they travel to Russia to track down Hugo Strange. Poison Ivy (with her girlfriend Harley Quinn in tow) leave Atlantis and travel to Russia to help lift the siege of Leningrad by using Ivy's powers over plant life to grow new crops of food for the poor. Raven sneaks out and away from Zatanna to join the duo and track down her beastly father Trigon (reimagined here as less of a demon and more of a folklore inspired wilderness Beast). Finally, in her biggest story arc since Stargirl's death way back in the second volume Supergirl returns to her homeland with Steve Trevor to find her father and mother only to run afoul of Lex Luthor and Hugo Strange. All in all this is a great volume and it keeps the series' setting firmly in the forefront. Ivy, Raven, and Supergirl are all struggling to contend with the horrors of war as the Nazis march into Russia; this is a great use of theme and setting after the previous volume lost a bit of focus to spend so much time in fictional Zambesi with Vixen and Hawkgirl. The twist reveal of a Bombshells-verse Superman at the end is a bit unnecessary, but playing him off as a clone of Supergirl's is an interesting move that keeps the focus on her. Finally, it is still frustrating that the series' best two characters (Mera and Wonder Woman) once again barely feature into this volume but I appreciate Bennett's willingness to share the love between her massive cast.

Me encantó

Great idea and art
Love the designs and ideas of the series, but am getting a little tired of everyone being in a lesbian triangle, square or even pentagon. It's a little too over the top. Almost like you can't be a strong woman and love a man at the same time. Any straight relationships are seriously down played in comparison. Other then that it's fun and I'm really enjoying the unique designs and art of each character.
