The whole story behind the MOPAR Racing program
Back in the 1970' s, when I was a kid--and a drag racer--I was all about everything MOPAR. There was a guy at a local Dodge dealership who used to process my DIRECT CONNECTION parts orders. Pinion snubbers, biased springs, TALL ring and pinion sets and carb rebuild kits for the '69 six-pack set-up I bought at a flea market. My ultimate quest was to find a 413 or 426 MAX WEDGE. I called upon an old lady selling a ,64 Chrysler 300 who stated, "It uses too much gasoline--It has two carburetors." I will be right over!!!

Mighty Mopar
Although I am a Ford man, I loved this book. To me, the most awesome looking "for drag racing only" cars were the '65 AWB Plymouths. The large photo of Lee Smith's Plymouth was fantastic. The cars were beautiful and looked fast even when parked. The history of the super stock Plymouths and Dodges gives enough detail w/o being boring. The book brought back good memories of the 60s.

Need larger print or font
Great book, have a small library of books bought over last several yr. on drag racing from 50's 60's 70's. Only reason I rated this book 3 stars is the print is to small, very hard on us folks of the bifocals generation. I even contacted publisher about seeing if could get this book in a little larger print, left a message of course they never responded. All my other books on drag racing no problem. So I would or will watch from now on if I see this author name on another book or this publisher I think twice or just not purchase his titles.Update: Would like to say that the publisher has contacted me now and was very nice and addressed my issue with this book. Very helpful, My Thanks to Motorbooks.

Nostalgia for Mopar Fans
For drag race fans growing up in the 60's, this book is pure heaven, especially if you favored Chrysler products. The book not only relives the glory days of stock class drag racing, but delves into the technical aspects and factory participation in that era. Perhaps a little too much detail regarding model trim changes from year to year, but still an exciting read for buffs.

THE authoritative text
Author Schild says in his introduction that he's been studing 60's Mopar door cars for decades. I can believe it! Unlike some superficially similar books on drag racing, this one reveals its author's encyclopedic knowledge of his topic. I've never seen a book of this type with such a wealth of information, from the highly technical to the more aesthetic. There are many photos, mercifully a good cross-section of Mopar wheelmen famous and obscure and not just the factory-backed stars. Ultra-detailed engine specs abound, as well as histories of each engines' development. All the Max Wedges and hemis are here, along with the Chrysler engineers, mechanics and drivers who spread the Mopar gospel in the 60's. You will not go wrong with this book whether you're a Pentastar fanatic or just interested in the history of drag racing. This one merits an A+.

Drag racing history
I raced during this period with a 1963 Plymouth savoy and can relate to books contents. Very informative and detailed information. A great time for drag racing and the book shows it. Highly recommended.

Into the Vapors
My driving perch is a 1962 Fuel-Injected 327 Corvette roadster, a 1966 Chevelle SS-396 360h.p. coupe and a ride in a 1961 Chevrolet 409 360 h.p. with the driver and one other passenger. I have to partially lust for and partially block driving and riding in the cars in this book to avoid joining an all out racing fraternity that tows overnight and races the next day. Letting others do it is not an assignement or division of labor. The only way to really appreciate this book is to copare some of the major players in it with the dry lakes characters of the 30's who built the after market speed equipment industry with the factory engineers and dealers who made all this happen. Alone, no one was going to find this level.

The first fabulous period of the pro-super cars (1962-1969).
Dear readers, this is the crazy period, when people discovered these famous muscles cars.Purchased at the car dealership around the corner, they were modified in the owner's garage to make them racing beasts. The speedways were born to compete between the different brands and engines.Cars & Rock'n'roll.Good reading... Eric.
