Small enough to be easily packed away when it's all collapsed
uilt solid and ready to be abused. Small enough to be easily packed away when it's all collapsed. The only possible problem is the threads between each sections of the handle are too fine. Once any sand or dirt gets in there it might get a lot harder to put them together or take them down quickly as designed. The other concern is it IS heavy.Update: took the shovel on a hiking trip to VT. when I packed I took off top section of handle and some unnecessary accessories and the weight is not a concern anymore.

Needs small improvement....
Needs a hole in the center bottom of carrying pouch (which I cut) so you can carry it assembled, rather than putting it together every time to use it such as metal detecting. Other than that its a nice strong shovel.

Great survival shovel!
The URmates outdoor survival shovel is well made at an affordable price. I have bought three of these for gifts including one for myself. My Dad and brother commented on how sharp and well made the stainless steel shovel head is. They loved how the aluminum handle breaks down and how everything stored in the handle. I loved the fact that you are getting a lot of gear in a compact package. Great for survival bags and keeping in your vehicle. The stainless steel seems to fairly thick and sturdy. (440c) Highly recommend!

Great axe/shovel
Its pretty good. Used the side of the shovel to cut some wood. Can easily keep parts of the shovel at home to make it lighter to carry. Bought this to chop wood, and to dig holes does the job.Unfortunately the compass was reversed polarized out the box.

Dangerous, broke when using
One of the handle extenders snapped while using this in ax mode. The shovel head came flying back at my head, very nearly ending a camping trip on a poor note. When that extending tube was removed, the handle began cracking when using the shovel to dig in the NC mountain dirt.Stay away form this one, folks. Poor quality materials and dangerous to use.
