Great grill starter
We have a Big Green Egg and were looking for a cheaper alternative to their brand of lump charcoal starters or their electric starter. After looking around and reading a lot of reviews, I decided to give these guys a try. They don't look like they do much, but they work perfectly for getting our lump charcoal going. I like to take a small square and put it on the end of a toothpick then light it and set it in the middle of the grill, surrounded by charcoal. They burn surprisingly hot and long and within minutes the grill is hot enough to use. They are all natural, unlike lighter fluid, and leaves no residue or taste on the food you grill. You get two packs, which will last you a long time. In fact, if you grill once or twice a week, you'll easily have enough for a year of grilling. There is very little to complain about here. They do have a strong, distinct smell, but it isn't like you'll be keeping these things on the middle of your dining table. One of my packs wasn't cut into individual squares, but I won't really complain about that as it only takes a few seconds to grab a knife and slice them up. Bottom line, if your looking for a good, clean charcoal starter, give these guys a shot, I think you will be very pleased with the results.

Great clean way to start fires.
I didn't like these at first since they didn't seem to burn as well as the synthetic stuff I was using previously, so I had to double-up on blocks in order to get a good fire going. While this worked, it wasn't quite as economical as using one brick, but you quickly find that you can break pieces off at various sizes, as the "perforations" for the individual bricks are merely guidelines. After a little practice, I can now get a fire going just as well as with these, though in high-wind environments, the small bricks go out quickly without shielding, so in that sense they're still not quite as good as the synthetic stuff. That said, I'll probably buy this again once I'm out. I've thus far used them exclusively with my Big Green Egg.

works well
This product works well to light charcoal. The only disappointment is that from the picture and the description, I thought it would be little blocks or at least a prescored slab. It is just one big piece. So I end up breaking off little chunks, which is okay. Just not a neat or consistent as I would like. Some chunks are bigger and some are small. However, it lights easily and gets the charcoal going which is the main point.

No odor and easy to start.
I had been using the Coleman brand starters, then came across these. They don't leave any bad taste or smell in the grill. The reason I gave 4 stars is because they are a little cumbersome. They come in two big bricks. They are perforated somewhat but don't always break off in similar size chunks. And speaking of size, I usually only use a chunk no larger than an ice cube while starting my charcoal in a chimeny and it works fine everytime.

Love that it is green but hate the smell
This is an incredible product, I love that it is environmentally sound, but it smells like new plastic. I even put it in a zip locked bag. I still use it and will probably even buy it again, I use it in this cool outside latern that I bought at home depot. It's a hit when I have parties and we end up on my deck. People get a kick out of the fact that it is just vegetable oil.

Strong Scent
We just got these and haven't used them yet so I can't speak to function, but I did want to warn people that these firelighters have a VERY strong scent. If you are sensitive to odors you may want to make sure you have a suitable storage area outside the house where you can keep these. I'm hoping that scent goes away when burned without affecting the flavor of the food.

good for starting charcoal in a chimney starter
I bought these to use for starting BBQ charcoal in a chimney style starter because they are non-toxic. Only complaint is that they are rather brittle and do not break cleanly into the intended squares, so you end up using variously sized chunks. But they catch quickly and do the trick.
