Creative and Exquisite Recipes
Julie Jones in one talented lady! Her Instagram page is an inspiration and her much anticipated book does not disappoint. The recipes are all beautifully composed in her delicate and creative way, and range from her exquisite tarts and pies, to Coffee and Walnut Mini Loaf Cakes, Triple Chocolate Celebration Cake, White Chocolate Creme Brulee Tart, Crumpets, Choux Puffs with Chocolate Cream, Charlotte Royale, and even Heart-shaped Churros. The photos do complete justice to her designs, and make it very difficult to choose what to create first.

Certainly written with soul, and very pretty
Julie Jones baking book has a backstory which certainly invites reader appreciation – the genesis, her mother’s dementia, and, as she had taught Julie the delights of baking, the was something mother and daughter could still engage in together, and it proved healing and comforting to bothThe author also found Instagram a source of comfort, community and creativity. I can’t argue with any of that, it was her experienceI did not realise quite how ‘the look of the thing’ and photographic allure would feature in the book. Decorative presentation is much more the focus than I am personally interested in. If posting pics of your baking is your bag, this is a perfect book.It looks very high end and professional, but there is also some useful information for those who don’t know how to make pastry, so there are some basics on techniques at the beginning of each ‘chapter’ Pastry bakings, Cakes and Bakes, yeasts, working with chocolate, desserts and the ‘weekend breakfasts/brunch’ (involving baked goods)My own disappointment is that there aren’t really, that many recipes, and most are designed as big show-off-my-art pieces. Nothing wrong with that, it’s just that though photos in cookery books are wonderful, I still find that the cookery books on my groaning shelves, which are most battered, stained, fingered and read – for ANY cooking needs, tend to be the ones where the authors unfurled hundreds of recipes and never bothered to take pictures. Cooking designed as a daily, enjoyable event. So, I like this, I think it fulfils its particular niche beautifully, but it is far too ‘for special occasions’ for me. Of course, we shouldn’t be drowning ourselves with sugar, but the absence of any savoury in the pastry section (which, admittedly, is not called pastry, but Fruits Tarts & Pies) is illustrative of where it misses my own ‘want to be inspired’ needs from a cookery book. The 'look inside' feature here on Amazon will be useful. Scroll down to the list of contents, and the index of recipes in each section should give an idea of what kinds of baked goods these are, as of course the sampled, and very typical, photos do. That should let you see if this is 'your' kind of baking bookThe book has covered itself for the English speaking market in all areas, with measurements in avoirdupois, metric and the weird (to a Brit) American cupI received this as a copy for review purposes, from Amazon Vine UK

ABSOLUTELY SUPER!
I own a huge collection of baking and dessert recipe books and I can already tell that this one is going to be referred to a lot.! A really wide variety of beautiful cakes, pastries, breads and desserts. I highly recommend this title if you’re undecided. The first one I shall be making is the Vanilla Panacotta with crispy caramel (conveniently also chosen because our oven is currently broken) and no baking required for this irresistible looking item!!Stunning full colour photos which are really inspirational. I already own another title by this author ‘The Pastry School’ which is fabulous.I shall report back after I’ve tried at least a handful of makes from this super-looking book.

Healing properties
The book refers to the author's struggle to overcome her grief at the gradual loss of her mother to dementia........ by means of baking as a kind of therapy. I can relate to that too.The end result is a positive outcome for all of us and a fitting tribute to her mum.

Wonderful cookbook
So far we've made two tarts, each with sub recipes. The nectarine and peach tart, and the lemon tart. The peach tart was a beauty to make. Each component - the tart dough, the lemon curd, the creme patisserie were easy to make as written and worked beautifully. The tart dough is fabulous and would make great cookies to boot. The finished product was beautiful and very very tasty - 9/10.The lemon tart was much harder. The meringue flowers never came together, and take two hours to bake. The lemon curd leaked over the side of the tart shell that shrunk a little and overlfowed the pan, the flavor was good, but not quite as good as my favorite bakery (Ladybug Bakery in Calgary). It was just a more finicky recipe and much less forgiving for novices - 7/10. The raw flowers were bitter and should be removed for eating, which is not mentioned.I cannot wait to explore more recipes, and maybe delve into the easier cookies, crumpets, cakes, etc. Each recipe is unique and enticing, and the photography is astonishing. Of course the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and everything made so far has worked and been well tested. The lemon tart failure was mine, and my only wish is that there were more warnings of common pitfalls. Overall an excellent cookbook.
