Exotic Natural Wood Knife Handle Scales

Good, dark coloration... extremely dark, almost hard to tell from black, but there is a very light tinge of brown. A lot of the newer Ebony sources are coming in with light streak patterns as these old dark solid supplies are drying up!

The Olive scales had beautiful grain and finished extremely well. The wax did tend to retain more moisture in them than my normal humidity so I had to let them acclimate a bit after removing the wax. Very pleased with the end result and I would order them again.

I bought these to make a gift and I am not disappointed at all. Great colors and super easy to work with. I highly recommend these wood scales to anyone looking for a great naturally dark wood for thier knife or pistol handle project.

Blackwood is great material for handles - durable, attractive, and easy to work. Natural oil in the wood makes finished material look great. The pieces I received were waxy but showed no visible checks or flaws on first inspection.Each pair was sliced on a bandsaw from a single block, so the inside grain faces match in a mirror image ("book matched"). The grain is fairly plain, but the scales do polish up very nicely. The length and width were 5" by 1.5", as expected.The only complaint is that the thickness was surprisingly uneven - although not less than 3/8". One piece of a pair was a scant 3/8" before smoothing, while it's mate was well over 1/2" thick. That leaves absolutely no margin for error, and extra work to even them up.The book matched faces are relatively straight and flat - typical of sawn surfaces, with light saw marks. But the opposite faces were neither flat nor parallel to the sawn face - so careful shaping was needed to even them.

Much praise and no complaints at all. I got these as a part of a larger order. This wood worked easily and took the finish well. Highly recommended. The zebra worked well right from the start and turned out perfectly. I must say that the ebony scales were kind of brittle and dry when I got them and so I did not use them right away. I just now got around to finishing the knife I bought them for. I stored the ebony blocks in a box I kept near one of my aquariums for a couple of years. The humidity made a difference. The scales ultimately turned out very nice.

Ordered the olive wood scales they’re very nice but cut in a way that the grain I desired will only be on the spine of the knife I’m putting them on instead of on the sides like shown on the picture, I understand that all scales are cut differently so all in all the wood is perfect... not to mention these guys got them to me extremely fast...
