Top Gun [DVD]

I would have given this aviation classic a 4, but my gf reckoned it's actually a 2 -- on average, it's a 3 then (quick maths).Basically (and this might be a spoiler), but the story is pretty bad: hot shot fighter pilot goes to school for hot shot fighter pilots, there's a couple of scenes with bad singing, Tom Cruise has a forbidden liaison with an improbable physics PhD (who looks like Michael Jackson in one scene), tragedy strikes, and then all of a sudden Tom Cruise/Maverick graduates from hot shot fighter pilot school, performs improbable acts of heroism, and then decides to GO BACK to hot shot fighter pilot school!!!!!The real reason you need to watch this is because it is a classic and perhaps a Top 50 pop culture reference point of the 20th century. It's also way more homoerotic than I remember it being the first time I saw it. That is not a bad thing at all, it just kind of makes it this emblem of the 80s. Really love the film. You will laugh, you might cry.I'd say now the most convincing reason to watch this is so that you can watch the sequel filmed around 35 years later. Top Gun is good fun and a cultural icon -- Top Gun: Maverick is actually the pinnacle of early 21st century cinema. So good [and no special fx apparently...].
