ZinsserB-i-n Primer & Sealer 1Ltr

I moved into a 70's built house which had Sapele doors. The previous owner had replaced and updated the room doors with modern white panel doors which looked smart but, there was 8 built in cupboard doors left in the sapele dark finish. I decided, due to low funds to paint these doors gloss white. This proved very difficult due to a streaky brown stain emerging through the under coat. The first two doors took NINE coats of undercoat to give me enough confidence that the top coat would go on ok. I had sanded the wood back to bare wood before I finished. The next pair of doors I tried leaving the original finish in place to hopefully seal the surface. No better result was obtained. With the 3rd pair of doors, various pre treatments such as trying to seal with dilute PVA or a solution of knotting still had no effect and the brown streaky staining emerged through the undercoat as the paint dried. I understand the tannin and other acids found in Sapele are responsible. I had tried several good brands of sealer primer but NONE overcame this problem. Then I discovered this fantastic paint. It is a bit runnier than you would expect and isn't bright white but it goes on easily with mini roller or brush, dries quickly as it says on the tin. Within an hour I applied a coat of ordinary undercoat and WOWWEE no sign of streaky stains. The top coat went on next and as they say in the trade, "the job's a good 'un"I cannot recommend this paint more highly even though it is expensive it is definitely worth it!

Having recently moved from a 1 bed flat to a 4 bed semi house and having different decor needs meant that my previous furniture of chairs and coffee tables no longer matched.Rather than throwing away a perfectly good set of 6 dinning chairs and a coffee table because they were dark brown (I needed them to be white) i thought i would give it ago at painting them first before any expensive furniture purchases were made.For the coffee table I used a known brand of primer and paint for indoor furniture, finish looked good for about a week before it started to peel and chip off, then it looked awful.I decided for the chairs that I would do some research and several websites advised B-I-N Zinsser Shellac Primer so I looked it up, gawked at the price and decided to bite the bullet.Glad I did as this stuff is probably the greatest primer I have ever used (though Valspar Primer is pretty good too). Man does it stick, Ikea laminate, no problem.Sand down the surface lightly, apply a coat of this, allow to dry, use a finer grit sand paper, lightly pass it over, give it a second coat, allow to dry and again a very light sanding. Then apply your preferred choice of colour, mine was a white Satin paint by Zinsser for two coats with a final light sanding. End result was a near as if factory like finish. You would never have known that the original was dark brown.And its durable too, doesn't chip or come off very easily.Its one and only downside is that in order to clean your brushes or rollers you will need turpentine, white spirit or petrol. This isn't environmentally friendly, takes a while to clean and is expensive. My advice, find the cheapest paint brush or roller, use it as much as you can on as many pieces of furniture in a day and then throw the brush away.I primed 6 chairs having dismantled, lightly sanded and washed down the day before, primed them the next. It dries so fast that by the time I finished priming the 6th chair, the 1st was dry, did the second coat then threw away the brush during clean up. Colour coated them the next day using a water based colour paint using a very good quality brush for excellent results.

I bought this to prime a few Ikea Billy bookcases in which their surfaces were of white 'foil' rather than wood veneer. I sanded down all the surfaces to give a key for the primer then wiped them clean. On applying the primer I was surprised at just how fast it dried. I mean, as you're actually applying it, it starts to become viscous within seconds so you have to work quickly. But that's the nature of this product. It forms a very good primed surface that allows almost any type of paint to be used over it.Very pleased with it.

i used this primer/sealer a few years ago on a very difficult surface on basement brickwork with mould etc, that other so called sealers couldnt do anything about. i havent looked at the job i did since then as basement is rarely used and i have had loads of other things to do. ive got a similar job to complete so went in the basement and was amazed to see a pristine surface, still white and blemish free. admittedly i did put three coats of paint on but this was a seriously damp wall - this paint has to be the best available and i know a couple of professional painters who swear by it. the fact that coverage is excellent and the finish first rate is just a bonus. ive also used it on old wood with knots, bathroom surfaces and to cover an ever repeating stain that looked like oil and no one could explain what it was. i just dont bother with any other primer if the surface is a least bit iffy. and for big jobs just keep a jar of meths handy to keep the brush soft. not sure about other reviewers using a roller as this seems to be asking for trouble........

I have used this on various kinds of surfaces to prime and block stains from knot bleed in wood, to rust stains and it has never let me down.Recommended and 5 stars from me,

Paint it on anything and a top coat of varnish, paint, undercoat or anything else will adhere to it. Dries very quick.

Used to paint skirting boards and fire surround. A little expensive but did the job
