Good value stone
I was after a general stone, predominantly for tools, but it might see a knife. Paul Sellers recommends a 250 (coarse), 600 (fine) and 1200 (superfine), so a 400 and 1000 seemed like a good compromise.I followed the instructions supplied and tested it using a vintage plane with a Sheffield steel blade that had seen better days. It's now sharp, so you can really ask for more. I haven't fully gone to town on it with the 1000, but it seems robust enough. Obviously time will tell and if I have an issue I'll update my review. If you're doing the same as me, I would say that something coarser would have been faster than the 400. But my rational is I shouldn't have to use a coarse stone often, and do you really need a superfine? My guess is a 1000 and leather strop would do the same. The silicone gripper supplied is a nice touch although it's not that robust that it can REALY securely hold it. So if you want serious precision you'll probably need something else to prevent movement. I'm OK with it and if nothing else having two will protect the stone.

Simple, cheap but affective! Perfect for the beginners
This is my first whetstone as I’m normally a diamond steel kind of sharpener, from a first look the packaging is simple but effective. My stone came clean and I damaged like others I’ve seen on the reviews. So as a beginner I read that the time to soak isn’t the 5 mins on the instructions but a longer 10-15 mins and to use slight pressure on the “away” strokes and none to return as to not gouge the stone. The 500 grit side is more for the repair or correction of a blades edge removing more material quicker and the 1000 is to create the edge which is more than good enough to give a great edge but razor sharp edges will need a higher grit stone. This stone comes with the rubber gripper that works well and helps make the most of the stone. As a beginner you need to be aware of the angle and a 15 degree angle is optimal. This is a great beginner stone that doesn’t cost the earth and worth it to hone your skills and get a sharp blade again

the BearMoo sharpening stone is a Corundum based composite material. It comes with a concise set of instructions and a non-slip holder, which works very well during use.The grain is much more consistent than many natural stones - which is prefect for beginners/intermediate users as it gives a very consistent hone across the surface, without any of the potential "inconsistencies" that you may expect from something that is a purely natural stone. With this in mind, in use it performs as one would expect. The 400 side is course enough to smooth our mild burrs and minor edge damage. The slurry it produces feels consistent and it produces it easily, yet without feeling too "soft" (mild would be the word IMO). The 1k side is equally as reliable, the finer grit works well very after the 400 to refine the edge. Granted, it will not give you a 100% mirror finish to the blade's edge that some may expect, but it can refine well if used sparingly and has given a much needed definition to the three knives (paring, cleaver and carving) I have needed to hone/improve.The only slight "issue" is the fact that the slurry on both grits is VERY easy to generate. The obvious implication is that this is not going to be the stone that you will be using for many years to come, factoring in the need for lapping it from time to time, it is going to be prone to wear. However, in this price bracket it is a reasonable expectation that it isn't going to be a "legacy" stone. So to sum up; a good starter/intermediate stone that provides a consistent grit to work well for various sharpening requirements, but one that has a very definite lifespan. Worth the money.

Worth the investment for long term sharpness
I took a little time before writing this review, partly because I am lazy and forgetful but also partly because I wanted to see how my knife faired over time, with a few sharpening sessions on the BearMoo Sharpening Stone.I bought this product with a specific knife in mind, the one I use most in the kitchen and which at the time had lost its out of the box sharpness. I had always liked the idea of being able to sharpen my own knives and grew up using purpose built kitchen utensils which just never seemed to sharpen the blade that much. I figured invest in a stone and learn a new skill and you'll get way longer out of your knives, plus be able to buy much better quality knives and know they will be looked after to make them worth the extra money.I did a quick bit a research and landed on this entry level stone in terms of grit. The 400 side is for the bluntest edges and really only used to bring a knife back from the dead. I used this initially and on some really old knives but its the 1000 I use most. On my first attempt I thought it was just another pipedream idea and I would just end up making my knife worse and having to buy a new one. However after a couple of attempts I got the hang of it and have now used it to freshen up the blade a number of times, after it has a few months use and starts to struggle with slicing veg.I will likely invest in the next grit levels up and get another BearMoo Stone to improve the blade even further. The stone itself is great quality and comes packaged in a tight little box which is very unassuming placed away in the kitchen drawer. It also has a rubber holder to keep the stone in place but I find a tea towel works just as well and can be used to wipe the blade as you go along.Zero bad things to say about this product really. For the price its definitely worth having a go and trying to pick this skill up. Your kitchen skills and your cooking will thank you for it.

Naja, jedenfalls braucht man Übung.

Perfect for knife sharpening newbie
It is my first time sharpening my knives, and I was successful with this. They provide rubber grips to protect the stones during delivery, and to hold during sharpening. They also put some extra bubble caps to protect the stone. Thanks for that!

I enjoyed it as a total amateur
I have never used a wetstone before. Despite this I have enjoyed learning how to sharpen my kitchen knives.I have given 4 a sharpen, just following some youtube instructions and they are defenately sharper. I need practice but the stone does seem to work. The stone is smaller than I imagined it would be (lengthwise). But big enough for a starter stone. The rubber base does move around in the pan I've used as a water basin during sharpening. So i'll be trying different bases to put it in.But to my unscilled eyes it is flat, it works and there is a noticeble grit difference between the two grit levels. I'm happy with my first wetstone and I think I'll keep on sharpening my knives using it, as it is relaxing and oddly satisfying. Might add on a higher grit stone, like 4-8 000 for finishing.
