Irwin Record Smoothing Plane 9-3/4-inch - 2-inch (50mm) Wooden Handle

I had one of these for years then lost it and bought a rival make. I then saw this on offer and decided to go back to it; Wow have I missed this plane!You will need to sharpen the blade as it's only factory ground and I had to adjust the blade holder to allow better clearance for the shavings (this is done with three screws and quite easy). This is a brilliant high quality professional plane and look after it, it should last you a lifetime.I have noticed some others giving it a low review but from a carpenter's point of view, I would highly recommend it. You must sharpen the blade though, just like a blunt kitchen knife you won't get great results without sharpness!

I am new to woodwork but bought this plane over the cheaper version for the wooden handles. It took some time to flatten the sole but other than that I am very happy with it indeed. The handle is a little loose but tightened it and now it is fine. It loses a star for the time required to flatten the sole and the loose handle. But seems as every plane sole needs to be flattened, and my lack of experience, the time and effort required may be normal.

A cheap workaround that does the job okay but falls short if you use a quality plane and compare; but then the price reflects this.

A well functioning plane, that represents good value for money. You will need to sharpen the blade before use. For high quality work you should probably also flatten the sole.

Needs work to make it work but put in the elbow grease and it works well. Use 400 grade wet and dry to flatten the plate and a diamond stone with a honing guide to sharpen it. Takes about two hours graft but then you do not have to spend over £200 for best ready to go planes

All round excellent

I do like this plane. You have this feeling of using a good quality tool. The rosewood handles certainly contribute to that. I would buy it again.
