Addendum to the review below.The supplier contacted me after my review and has processed a 10% refund. I am perfectly willing to say that I may simply have received the slightly duff set in a batch. I sent the supplier some jpegs of some of the pieces and pawns to illustrate that I thought my review was honest opinion (one such image attached - 'A pawn and its big brother') and received the reassuring reply as below.Thank you for the images i can see the difference, Please accept our deepest apology in this matter , And we appreciate your inspection ofour product, we will make sure to rectify these mistakes from our next production.I have been trying to find a good small magnetic chess set for a specific purpose for months and have purchased some absolutely duff ones in the past. I thought that this one was going to hit the spot, and thought that it had actually done so at first sight. Sadly on closer inspection I found that some of the magnets in the bases of the pawns and pieces had been cemented in at an 'angle' which meant that some pawns and pieces leaned over instead of standing straight. I tried to remove the offending magnets to re-seat them but they seem to have been cemented in 'wonky' for life. In the end I had to glue tiny pieces of card on the bases of the bad pawns and pieces to correct things so that they stood up straight. In may not sound like much of a problem but we chess players can be a finicky lot. The black pawns are a rum bunch. Various slightly different shades of brown, and a couple are noticeably larger than the others. The same goes for some of the pieces - both the black and the white. Another slight issue with this otherwise quite nice set is the lack of lettering and numbering on the board which might be a problem to players new to algebraic notation. Otherwise it's fine! The set took about a month to come all the way from India so if you are buying as a gift allow plenty of time for delivery.

This set is a bit of a curates egg. The board is well crafted and stylish. No it doesn't lay totally flat but as the pieces are magnitised they don't fall off so I can live with that.The closure clip is cheap and flimsy so I have an elastic band as well to stop it springing open. Also not all the felt pads beneath the pieces are that well stuck so I'll need to glue them. It would also have been good if the magnitised area extended right to the edges so that 'taken' pieces would remain stuck on the board with less likelihood of losing them if you have to pack up quickly.

Great for the price, do have a few minor issues though. This is the second board I got (returned the other as it didn't open fully). The clasp that holds the board shut is a little difficult to open as it sits flat against the side of the board, the first board's clasp was much better. Also a few pieces have slight errors like small bits of wood in between the slots in the top of a rook. The magnets are great for nearly all pieces and can be held upside down without falling off.I'm mostly splitting hairs to be fair, but i feel like i would pay a fair bit more for a board i was fully satisfied with

This is a superb product, beautifully crafted, small and delightful. It is nicely magnetic, the quality of the workmanship is absolutely first-class - not a rough edge or badly-carved piece in it. The lovely wooden box holds the well-carved wooden pieces nicely in foam packing when closed-up, the closures work well and are beautifully made. When the box is open for play, the playing surface is glass-smooth and magnetic. The whole box is small, light and portable. I really love this product and I am glad I bought it. I would highly recommend this product and I might well buy another one as a gift for a friend.

Pieces are machined well and magnet strength is appropriate; pieces can stick upside down but there's no distracting 'clickiness' placing or removing them.However, the board itself is surprisingly poor quality. There is warping and cracking throughout, and the board does not sit flush when it opens up. It makes the set a bit unpleasant to use. Not really worth buying, I think -- it's much cheaper and shoddier in person than in the pictures. You'd get something better quality for cheaper in a thrift shop.

This would be a really excellent product if it wasn’t for a lack of quality control - the board doesn’t open completely flat, so you play with a slope up to the centre.Also, you’ll see from the photos that one half of the board face is at an angle.Apart from these two issues, it’s a great set.

This is a beautiful chess set. Well constructed and actually looks as nice as it does in the pictures...Bought this for a family member who loved it. There was initially a slight problem with my order but the seller resolved this straight away without any issues or questions. Brilliant service I would highly recommend...
