OptiBacProbiotics Saccharomyces Boulardii - Vegan Scientifically Proven Digestive Probiotic Supplement, 5 Billion CFU - 40 Capsules

I've been buying this product for some time and I can't believe I haven't posted a review before - maybe i have and have forgotten, because this is a LIFE CHANGING product. I know that sounds like an infomercial, but if you are reading this as a fellow sufferer of Irritable Bowel Syndrome you will probably forgive what seems like hyperbole and understand that it is not. Living with permanent diarrhoea is a MISERABLE existence - and its just misery plus frustration to go through the endless trying of different diets, doctors appointments, supplements and tests in search of relief. Indeed I had tried pro-biotics a few years previously with no success, if thats you then TAKE NOTE they have come A LONG way in the last few years, and the key is that its not just a broad-spectrum cure-all anymore, this company in particular seem to have done a great job of studying and isolating the different strains for different therapeutic effect. In brief my history is a hyperactive bowel - many many movements per day every day, 'diagnosed' as IBS and with SOME (but not enough) improvement from a Gluten free and low-fructose diet. (I went through the Fuctose-malabsorption diagnosis, and I still stick to a low fructose diet most of the time) - i am satisfied that in my case the absorption of fructose IS part of the problem. Anyway, it got to the point where I was cutting out more and more foods to maintain the effect, and I concluded that it was clear that some bacteria was failing to flourish in my gut, thus preventing me from absorbing fructose. And that in fact starving the gut of fructose really only made me MORE sensitive in the long run. Now you'll find a curious direction on the packaging saying 'take 1-4 capsules per day - or up to 6(?) and considering the price of this product you'll be hoping you are not in the up to 6 category. but in my case 1, 2, 3, or 4 capsules per day had no recognisable effect. I need the whole six - so its an expensive exercise, but of course to get relief from the kind of chronic symptoms I'm describing you'll pretty much sell a family member. So I don't mean to declare this a cure for IBS - there is no such thing because so many different conditions are all rolled into one under that phrase which is basically code for 'your doctor doesn't know what to do with you' - but if your symptoms sound anything like mine - then DO TRY THIS. Oh and in my case - the effects (once I went up to full dose) were almost immediate - the downside is if you STOP taking it the effects are pretty immediate too!

A far as probiotics go, it does exactly as you'd expect. I personally didn't experience any side effects and did feel my stomach become more balanced and healthy.

Read through so many reviews on different probiotics, these had a lot of positive reviews but sadly hasn't made much difference to my IBD. However, for the first time in years my nails are strong. I have felt healthier in myself. Will continue to take them.

Was suffering for months with stomach pain and having to go the the loo many times a day. It got to the point I didn’t want to go anywhere and it was giving me anxiety. I researched this product and thought I’d give it a go and it was instant results! Pain has pretty much gone and my toilet habits have improved loads. Sometimes I have to take more than 2 if I’m having an off day but they really do work. If you have tummy issues then do try it!

The delivery of the product was fast, so I can't fault the supplier. However, I only read about the contraindication of SB causing constipation AFTER purchasing this product, and, yep, constipation is what I got. I purchased this product to help improve my gut flora and SB is generally highly recommended as being a more robust probiotic that can help with digestive issues with more benefits than most other probiotics. I did notice that I wasn't passing wind as much during the month I took this product (I took 2-3 capsules per day - from memory, I think the label says it's possible to take up to 6 capsules a day) BUT I also noticed discomfort caused by being backed up with constipation, and I'd personally conclude that for any benefit the SB is having in my gut, the benefit is being negated by the constipation, which causes its own toxicity and immune system issues. I was even drinking a lot more water during the month that I took this product, but that didn't alleviate the constipation. (What I mean by 'constipation' was that I was only passing low stool volume every 2-3 days, and it was less than half my usual amount.) On that basis, I won't be purchasing SB probiotic again whether from Optibac or from another manufacturer. I do wish that Optibac would list possible side effects on its label as well as stating whether the number of live cultures in the product are at the point of manufacture or at the point of retail. Optibac could do a lot better, since probiotics are not exactly a cheap product to buy, and customers should be able to make a fully informed purchase before parting with their money.
