A New York Genius from Iowa
One of the most underrated artists of the 20th Century, Arthur Russell needs more exposure. Others have described him - lazily in my opinion - as the disco Nick Drake!?!? WTF! Arthur was a different artist altogether, there's no comparison between the two men.

Strange. Enchanting. Haunting. Good production quality too.

Sublime emptiness
Soul Jazz deliver yet another wonderful slice of musical history. The late, and decidedly singular, Arthur Russell can be but one of a few musicians to lay claim to a dub-cello album (see 'The World of Echo'). Here he's to be found lurking behind a clutch of meticulously crafted melodies underpinned by toe-tapping rhythm lines. As with much of this man's music his genius is to be found in the profound sense of emptiness at the heart of it all.Brilliant, and highly recommended.

Three Stars
Some good songs but also a lot of fillers.

Hypnotic Dance Grooves Mixing Punk and Disco in a Classic NYC Sound!
Arthur Russell did not achieve widespread fame, celebrity status or musical acknowledgement while he was alive; it is cause for both celebration and some sadness that he has achieved all of these after his tragic death at the age of 40 in 1992.Russell was a true musical voyuer and explorer - classically trained, his music was a rare, hypnotic fusion of dance, new wave and his classical background - that would only be possible in a city which brings so many diverse cultures together - New York City.Russell is one of the great missing links in music and is so doing creating something genuinely new and captivating: dance music for those who love dance and dont, new wave music for those who love new wave and dont, and music pushing boundaries for those who ignore boundaries. This is the place to start investigating Russell - a collection which combines some of his best and most acclaimed singles - recorded under a host of names - Arthur Russell, Loose Joints, Dinosaur L and several others. It is truly fabulous that the music of Russell is finding new audiences and fans; it is also a tragedy he never lived to know how loved and influential his music would be.

Seminal punk funk space grooves from the master
Essential collection of this man's work, who influenced so many of todaysrespected dance music makers in the early eighties. Adventurous andavante garde, smoked out space disco alongside punk funk jazz rhythms, with Russell's Sun Ra-esque wordings floating in and around, just as youthink you're getting the hang of it, another cheeky number turns your headupside down and off on another acid ride. Eclectic, camp as you like andunapologetic about it, think Larry Levan on Ketamine and you're gettingclose. With his solo work, Dinosaur L grooves, and remixes by Levan andFrancois K all getting a groove on, this is an album for all free thinkingfunkateers . Throw a party, smoke some jazz fags, turn the lights low andthrow some Russell on and watch the walls fall down.

The best
A gem of a record. My favorite of all Arthur Russell albums. Flirtations with the dance floor. Lots of left field disco banger and sweet melodies on this stellar record. Swoop this on wax.
