Your skin and the sun The skin is the body’s largest organ and it’s primary role is to protect us against potential damage from the outside. Sun and ultraviolet light account for some 80-90% of all the damaging effects the skin is exposed to. Sun and ultraviolet light causes oxidative stress in the skin. UV light is absorbed by the skin and the excessive energy from the UV light can be absorbed by compounds normally present in the skin.The absorption of energy from UV light by these compounds cause the generation of so called reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are also termed free radicals. Free radicals are generated in many biological processes and include a variety of diverse species. There is a normal production of free radicals in the organism which is regulated by an antioxidant defence systems. The a of the free radicals can be balanced by antioxidants. This process maintains the stability of the human body’s internal environment in response to changes in external conditions. When this balance is lost, free radicals may produce alterations to the , proteins and cell membranes in the skin. The visible sign of this photo-oxidative damage is erythema (redness). For obtaining a photo-protection from within – the antioxidant defence systems need to be present at the target sites i. e. the skin exposed to sun light.
