The Planter's Wife (1952) - Region 2 PAL Import, plays in original English audio without subtitles: Official ArtHouse Media Spanish Region 2 PAL DVD release as pictured. Runtime 88mins. THE PLANTER'S WIFE (1952): The marriage of rubber-plantation owner Jim Frazer and his wife, Liz, which has survived many disasters, including years in a Japanese internment camp, is at a breaking point. Under constant threats of bandit attacks and concerned with the safety of his plantation and the people on it, Jim spares no time for his marriage. Liz is to take their young son, Mike, home to school in England, and, without telling Jim, does not plan to return. A neighboring plantation is attacked and the owner killed just prior to her departure. Liz and Jim get arms and ammunition from a near-by town, and a night of terror follows as the bandits attack.

ACCURATE AND GRIPPING
Seller has helpfully included instructions on how to access English language soundtrack on this Spanish DVD (not difficult). I got this to help with some research into the period- I was not disappointed as details of vehicles, uniforms etc are very accurate. Also, it's a rattling good yarn! Fascinating stock footage of fight to the death between mongoose and cobra has been cleverly inserted into the film. Great cast, highly recommended.

The Planters Wife DVD
This version of the DVD is 1 hour and 24 minutes long. Do not purchase this DVD because there is another uncensored version which is 1 hour and 28 minutes long. The censor has cut a 4 minute section in the middle of the DVD abruptly and this destroys how the film plays.

It does play in English!
I have to disagree with the 1 star reviewer. The trouble is the menus are all in spanish so it needs a bit of work. I used google translate to work out what to do but basically you select 'Idiomas' from the first menu, then 'version original' from the second followed by 'sin subtitlos'. Finally choose 'Ver Pelicula' (view movie) and away you go.

A good story and fairly accurate in detail
Mature actors Jack Hawkins and Claudette Colbert play their parts to the full with the stiff upper lip. Build up of tension excellent and final scenes do not disapoint. Soldiers of that period will recognise much to remember.

Malaya in the 1950s
this is a suspenseful heartfelt foray into the world of the Malay Emergency in the 1950s. Great stuff. No PC straitjackets, and unexpectedly insightful. Jack Hawkins is great in this.

Not worth watching.
Very disappointing, when compared with the film the 7th Dawn, which is a more gripping film, and well acted.
