Staunton chess pieces have been the standard for tournament chess since 1849. These attractive pieces, hand crafted in Poland from hornbeam wood, are packaged in a beautiful wooden box. Each chessman is weighted with metal.

There's a reason the photos are so small.
The sets looks nice enough for the children on the photos and the box does too but when it arrived the unwrapping was a disappointment. The outer packaging looked really cheap, the box with the pieces was better but the pieces themselves are too light and rather crudely cut (they're not polished). Well what do you expect for £25 you ask? Well something of higher quality than this. You would be better off spending another £20-25 and getting a quality 3.75 or 4 inch Staunton set from Regency or Chess & Bridge. I donated this item to the Christmas raffle at our Junior Chess Club Christmas party. A young junior would probably be fine with it and you won't get so mad when they lose the pieces or the youngest tries to eat them.

After having had 3 pieces disappear from my beautiful, 20-year old set (the Weimaraner is the culprit)
After having had 3 pieces disappear from my beautiful, 20-year old set (the Weimaraner is the culprit), I chose this set as it came boxed in what looked to be a decent case, and so would not be able to be got at by the dog. The case is fine - the lining is some form of brushed plastic, rather than a proper vellum, but that is the only reason for not giving 5 stars. The pieces themselves are decently carved and have a good feel. They are not as weighty as my previous set - but that one was a bit special.

Poor work
One of the black pawns have a crack in the middle which runs all the way down while getting bigger. The white king has a discoloured crown. These two faults are clearly visible and ugly, but the set is still playable, and I'm not really a perfectionist that care too much about this, so I won't do much about it, but I know others who would not hesitate to send the set back and demand a refund.

Very comfortable to use
This is an ideal size of chess men for use with a standard board

Not as impressive as you may think....
Nice enough for the price (£28), but I wouldn't consider it to be deluxe in any way. Individual pieces not very heavy. Case insert very cheap plastic. I won't be sending back, but wish I'd have spent another £15 or so on a better set.

Satisfied
A basic set to teach an off spring - description "Deluxe" is a bit OTT but it is more than right for the job
