Still running.......
The end of The Maze Runner opened up interesting possibilities for the stories to come. Without the actual maze anymore the next test was to create new narrative momentum and this has proved to be pretty successful as our young heroes enter The Scorch. There's still plenty of running of course. And shouting. And screaming. It's a fairly all action affair as we bounce along from one problem to the next, from one set piece to another. Evil corporations, freedom fighters, mercenaries, zombies (kind of) are all thrown into the mix. There's a few twists in the plot and an effective sense of not really knowing who's side everybody's really on. There might be a love triangle developing (yawn) but it's not too heavy handed at this point so I'll go with it.It all looks mighty impressive of course with some dynamic land and cityscapes so overall it manages to retain its own identity and keep the franchise building nicely. Recommended for some good, solid, big budget sci-fi action.

Brilliant - whole family loved it
Brilliant follow up to the maze runnerinitially thought this was going to struggle to follow on from the extremely clever maze runner, but 10 minutes in, there is already intrigue and twisted plots The main character, Thomas, unveils dark secrets when he questions a seemingly " too good to be true" rescue - and he is of course right. Then moves to the clever escape , followed by some pretty " cover your eyes" zombie moments leading to the brain hurting " who can you really trust" questions. Brilliantly edgy, cleverly put together - managed to keep the whole family gripped to the end. Eagerly waiting for the 2017 film !

A very average action adventure for teens
Firstly, I have to make clear that I haven't read the books, I'm not a fan of the series and I'm not the target audience. Here's my review:Once again I have to challenge Amazon's genre category. This is not a drama. It's an action, adventure film for a mainly teenage audience.Sadly, this film doesn't live up to the first which is often the way with sequels. There's not enough substance to the film and it has as many holes as a lump of Swiss cheese. Characters seem to have knowledge or abilities which are really pivotal to the story but at no point are you told how they come by them. "Hey, let's head to the mountains but just don't ask how I know how to get there. I just know OK?!?" After a while I get a bit annoyed of being forced to make those kinds of assumptions. There is zero character development. There are some new protagonists dropped in for good measure but as they're not developed at all you just don't really care much about them. On top of that some of their behaviour is unrealistic. The movie plot (without spoilers) is basically that the group of kids from the first film need to get from point A to point B. So, you get 2 hours of pretty much constant running, shouting and shooting people. There are some interesting sort of science fiction discoveries along the way but again as they're on screen for like 2 seconds and are not discussed by anyone (presumably left open for the next sequel) what you've just seen doesn't appear to be important and so they go back to running, shouting and shooting stuff.I'm not going to comment on the acting or lack of as the script just didn't require any so I think it would be unfair to do that.................. Oh go on then. The evil doctor in charge from the first film actually isn't that evil and the other significant bad guy (the doctor's henchman) isn't that scary either. I haven't read the books but I'm guessing there was more menace on the page than in the film. Bad casting or bad acting? Maybe a bit of both. The camera work seemed a bit cliched at times and out of place. Again, not enough substance but plenty of filler........ that is filling time! The CGI cityscapes are well done but are not overly impressive as they've featured in pretty much every post apocalyptic movie since the mid 90s and we've all just got used to the realism they create. The editing left something to be desired as I often felt the scene had been cut short when it shouldn't have. I found it quite jarring. The worst example was when one of the characters was being rescued and the scene was cut before you even saw how the rescue was carried out. "Hey, don't ask me how I'm still alive. I just am OK?!?" In another scene there's a big chase that lasts a good 5 minutes and then just cuts to them hiding. How the hell did they escape? I've paid good money for the privilege of knowing how they escaped. It's inexcusable. I'm afraid I expect more from a Hollywood blockbuster. An audience's intelligence shouldn't be insulted in that way.For anyone that wants to know if it's suitable for younger children then please check the BBFC website for a detailed film synopsis and spoilers. If you can't be bothered with that then yes, there are some scary sequences involving zombie like, virus infected humans that cause some injury to certain individuals. There are 2 sequences which show closeups of injuries sustained by the zombies but these are mild in nature and not at all gratuitous. In addition, there is still the element of threat to consider. If you're still unsure, please watch it first without your kids and then you'll know for sure.Don't get me wrong there are worse films out there but this film felt like it was just a filler between book one and book 3. It had a very light and flimsy plot held together by lot's of action sequences which of themselves leave you feeling empty and unrewarded. The whole point of an action film is that every action sequence leads to a payoff for both the characters and the audience, good or bad. If that doesn't happen you have to question why a director is making this type of film.In summary, if you're a fan of the series then you'll probably want to see how things develop and progress towards the next sequel. For the rest of you, if you want to kill a couple of hours with an action flick this would be an OK choice but nothing more. Just leave high expectation in another room.

4k Ultra HD Blu Ray
Parents need to know that Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is the second movie in the Maze Runner trilogy. Based on James Dashner 's best-selling dystopian young adult novel, the film should attract teens (and adults) who are familiar with book series, as well as fans of star Dylan O'Brien (MTV's Teen Wolf ).
