Canon EW-83J Lens Hood for EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

Good but expensive lens hood.
A great addition to any budding photographers' toolkit. This lens hood works with the Canon 17-55mm EF-S f2.8 lens. It's ideal at blocking lens flare and improving the evenness of light across the lens.It also serves as a protector of the lens so that should you bump your camera, it's less likely that something will touch the lens through the hood. When not using the hood, it can be fitted in reverse to the lens which minimises space and also helps when storing your equipment. In terms of price, as will all camera accessories, it's a bit expensive. There are cheaper alternatives but the quality does not look as good, however, I would not say this is £29 worth of plastic.Overall, it's good if you need it but is expensive.

Good fit easy to use needs a bag
This Canon hood fits my Canon 17 - 55 mm lens much better than the generic one I bought originally and lost. I have quite severe arthritis in my hands and although my lens is 77mm wide I am able to fit this much more easily. It has a velvety finish inside, which I have read deals with any reflected light. My only bug bear along with many other Canon customers of this lens is the fact it does not come with the expensive lens or have a purpose made bag to protect it when out in the field) changing lens and moving items around in my camera bag). It is largish as it must be to cover the lens opening. However it is much neater than the generic one I bought before, and I am pleased I paid the extra for ease of fit and use.

good product but overpriced and should come as standard
Pretty much par for the course for a Canon accessory - it's robust, well made, fits perfectly, looks decent and has good ergonomics (nice rounded edges and a durable finish that is easy to grip even in wet conditions). The felt texture lining is great for killing reflections. So the product itself is great. The problem is Canon expects us to shell out an obscene amount of money for what is, fundamentally, a fairly simple little bit of plastic, which really should be included with the lens to start with.

Expensive but necessary
This is expensive for what it is, however, having gone through 2 third party hoods (1 was awful for, other cracked) I settled for an original. Can't fault the quality, just too expensive!

Good item, worth the extra money
Despite the relatively high cost of this hood in comparison to third-party replacements, I am glad that I purchased this instead. It is very well made from sturdy-feeling plastic and it has black velvet inner faces to eliminate reflections which most third-party replacements do not. From my experience it prevents flare well and covers the unused parts of the lens opening at 17mm on a 1.6x crop sensored body perfectly without causing any vignetting.I have been using this hood with the Canon 17-40mm f/4 L on my Canon 550d and I can say that it fits onto this lens perfectly and works just as well as on the EF-S 17-55mm since it has the same widest focal length. This is much more effective than the standard EW-83E on a 1.6x crop body since the EW-83J is specifically designed for a crop body (as it's made for an EF-S lens) and so covers more of the unused parts of the lens opening. It also fits onto my lens backwards which is useful to reduce the length of the lens for storage. Note that this WILL NOT work on a full frame body such as the Canon 5D as the 17-40mm is much wider on such bodies and so strong vignetting would result.Overall I think that this is a good piece of kit, worth the extra money over third-party alternatives. I would recommend it to a friend.

The essential accessory for the Canon EF-S 17-55mm
Based on numerous published tests of this lens, it seems that internal flare can be the one undesirable characteristic for this otherwise superb lens. This makes use of a lens-hood essential. This one does the job effectively but at a price. Canon must be incredibly confident to charge such a high price for a bit of moulded plastic - that is in essence an essential part of their product. I use the hood on a Canon EOS 40D and find it excellent.

It's a canon... of course!
High quality product.Perfect finishing touch onthis high grade lens and my 7D.One could achieve a similarfunctionality with 3rd party products, but there are details on this productthat are not found on others, such as theinside surface of the hood which is coveredwith a very special absolutely non-reflectivematerial. You get what you pay for!

A piece of a plastic hoodie for your Canon lens ...
A piece of a plastic hoodie for your Canon lens with a fancy internal coating. Does the job. price wise: cost of a piece of plastic made in Japan = X, cost of an engraving of the word "CANON" on top of it =10X. You get the idea.
