Q: are they actually 19 inches square? The picture appears to show them tapered in the back.

The chair cushion is actually a little large in the front, maybe 19-20 and in the back it tapers to 18.

Q: Can you please explain what the break in period mean?

Hello, Amazon sent me a request to respond to your question regarding patio pads. Not sure why I got the email - I did not write "break in period." I do though have the pads, this is my third year. They have worn well and have barely faded. I do keep patio covers on due to squirrels, but have been very happy with this purchase. They are a very good value.
