Hot swap drive bay that's hot to trot!
Price Paid £15.42 - December 2015A great solution for many problems such as transferring large amounts of data between PCs - obviously it helps if each PC has one of these. You could also use it to allow different operating systems or setups on the same hardware. I use it for speedier backups overnight and at the end of the day using Acronis True Image. I then transfer the completed and incremental backups to my NAS in the background whilst I am working. This reduces the actual backup time by 30-40%.There are a couple of things to consider. You may need to set up the SATA port as "plug and play" in the bios. This allows you to connect and disconnect the drive as a standard removable drive - just use the Safe to Remove icon to ensure all data has finished writing before you disconnect it.The drive bay construction is not particularly rigid and so it really needs screwing into the case. This may necessitate removing hands free mechanisms in the drive bay you want to use.Be aware that the key provided is likely to be the same for each unit of this model. I have three and all the keys are the same.Although the door seems a little unsubstantial, in use it has been faultless and incredibly convenient. Even with the issues above this is easily a 5 star product that could be developed further.

Very good product - instruction to connect LED connection
I understood the issue of the HDD LED wire. There are no instructions about the issue of what to do with the HDD LED connection cable. Here is the answer. Having the original HDD LED connection and the new HDD LED connection is highly important. And a "T" connector is the answer. I was concerned before I implemented this fix that a parallel LED connection may reduce the LED illumination, but this was not an issue. Solution: Leave the Original HDD LED connection on the Motherboard and use a special "T" adapter to join the new Caddy HDD LED in parallel. Here is the Amazon device required. A pack of several items mean some may not be used, but the cost is low. Paste this line into Amazon Search Field: UK cost on January 2023 was £9.39 - WMYCONGCONG 15 PCS Wire Connector 2 Pin 2 Way Low Voltage Universal Compact Wire T Tap Connectors No Wire-Stripping Required for 20/22 AWG Cable (T Type)

Is well made and sturdy enough I wish the closing mechanism was a little better
It's a good unit and fairly easy to install. The door on it is not as smooth as I would have liked, sometimes it puts up a bit of resistance but not much.

How did I manage without it ?
I have several of these Startech devices and when I bought my first I was amazed how much easier it made access to HDDs. I couldn't believe that someone had not thought of this before. The build quality is good and although several have commented on the flimsy plastic door, it is backed by a steel plate which pushes onto the drive. Handled carefully it should last for years. If you have a spare 5.25" slot in your case then go for it - you will not be disappointed.I use them mainly to transport my HDDs from one computer to another but it also serves as a neat solution to security problems. You can easily remove your drive(s) and store them safely away whenever you want. One slight problem I have found is that sometimes you can get an annoying vibration despite the built-in rubber mountings. This probably depends more on the drive and/or case being used. You can use the in-build HDD LED instead of the one in your case if you wish. It is a very bright blue when it functions but I have had two units where the LED was faulty.

Not hot-swap and no cable included
this device is not hot-swappable at all, on any (3x) BIOS's i tested it on.HP Z800 workstation: NO, requires drive swap and reboot (linux 6x)Custom NAS/asus board: NO, causes a hard crash when hot-swap attempted (FreeNAS)ROG board: NO cases a BSOD or soft lock when hot-swap attempted (windows 11)it also gets -1 star for not including a sata cable.

A simple boost to your desktop PC options
This gives you something close to the drive caddies used by server computers, so you can plug in or remove standard 3.5" SATA drives without having to open up your desk-top computer's case. It mounts in a standard 5.25" bay, using the normal power and data connections, and then you just open the access flap, slide in the drive, and close the flap. You can lock it too, if you need to.While it needs the right sort of motherboard controller and BIOS settings, which I have never tried, it even can allow a hot swap, rather than having to stop and start the whole machine. Having one of these is also good for making back-ups: you can keep the drive with the backed-up data in a secure place, although you should get some drive carrying cases too.I am installing a second unit, and even on the rather old hardware I have, the BIOS can do some RAID stuff. That's not my plan, but using this sort of device certainly will suit that option. Two of these bays, if you have room in the case, makes it fast and easy to duplicate a drive, though a USB-3 external drive might suit you better.Maybe the only weakness this could have is cooling. This has a vent, but the airflow depends on fans sucking air out of the case.

A lot better than expected...
Best caddy I have bought. Unlike other reviewers I don't think the door is too flimsy.Yes key does jump out, but probably a good thing for me as I wouldn't want to catch my leg or foot with it!Feels like it enjoys accepting a drive, just goes in so smooth, in fact I'm going OCD and keep taking the drive out and re-inserting it, just like people opening & closing the VW Golf door on that add....ha ha :-DQuality designed chassis as well, rubber mounted to stop the vibrations from going through to the drive.Very good value for money, just going to have to get two more :-)Update:Ordered two more from same company as the first one was so good...the two new ones are slightly different and have a different screw thread for fitting which is a real pain as these wont go easily in to a DELL 690 bay now, because the 690 uses different screw threads :-( had to tap out the holes to use the 690 screws...Also shipping boxes were different and no stickers on the doors saying StarTech.com...

Much better than expected
This trayless hot swap adapter has a very nice fit and finish to it.I immediately noticed that the frame is sturdy and the hard disk itself is vibration isolated from the chassis. Install was a breeze, and it works. I will certainly be buying more of these. High quality product!Pros -- Basically all of it- The plastic parts feel good and not cheap- The metal frame and latch are sturdy- Vibration isolation- Data/power connector makes a good connectionCons -- I really can't find any.
