Buy this masterpiece!!!
After purchasing and loving All Shall Fall I wanted more Immortal! At the recommendation from a number of people and several reviews of others I finally purchased Sons Of Northern Darkness. I knew that One By One was a live favourite and hoped it would live up to my expectations and it certainly did. One By One is truly amazing as an album opener, a black metal track and a bonafide metal classic that WILL stand the test of time! And we're still on the first track of the album!!! Sons Of Northern Darkness just continued to blow me away with its icy melodic black metal. Tracks like Tyrants, In My Kingdom Cold, Antarctica and Beyond The Northern Waves are quite simply amazing! My personal favourites are Tyrants, with its slow tempo melodic mid section, and Antartica with its chilling polar wind/synthesizer intro giving way to bombastic rhythm and guitar harmonising. The only negative (and its a minute negative) I have is that I find myself skipping Demonium and Within The Dark Mind to get to other tracks on the album as I simply like them more. Thats it. Nothing major to worry about.I cannot praise this album enough! Not only has Sons Of Northern Darkness made me a massive Immortal fan it has changed my life. I know that sounds cheesey but it truly has! I knew little of black metal until I encountered Immortal! May they continue onwards for many years to come!Just buy this metal masterpiece!

Ravishing Grimness... Manic Grinning!
I bought this as a download on a whim when Amazon told me I had MP3 credit due to expire, as it turns out this cheaper download was a better purchase than Autopsy's "Severed Survival", which I bought as a CD at a greater cost.First of all, the guitar work sounds like black metal guitar, only it doesn't.It has that cold raspy sound we know and love but does so without sounding like an angry wasp trapped in a shed, I find that kind of sound annoying and distracts me from the rest of the instruments, and with that absent, how well written the other instruments' parts are is just so clear and obvious. Abbath's "singing", is clearly his, he doesn't sound like a generic BM rasper from today's scene trying to sound like a first wave vocalist. I listened to this back to back at work with "At the Heart of Winter", and whilst I couldn't get enough of ATHOW when I bought it, to my great surprise "Sons of Northern Darkness" sounds even better!

A fine piece
As per usual, Immortal deliver a brĂ¼tal and crushing masterpiece. Heavy. Not lacking in production. Fantastic riffs and vocals. Just a great album to boot.

Fantastic album, from a band from whom you know what to expect
from At the Heart of Winter onwards I suppose, when Peter Tagtgren became their permanent producer, Immortal have stuck to fairly similar material...this is not a bad thing, as this flawless album shows that less is more - same not particularly original but still poetic and dramatic lyrics about winter and the north, more groovy, catchy heavy riffs...more classic Immortal done extremely well, and like At the Heart of Winter, which this may even better, this has such a great atmosphere and an "epic" feel on the likes of Antarctica and Beyond the North Waves...just goes to show that a bunch of chilled out guys who just talk and dress like rock stars really who never feel the need to experiment too much can still make amazingly powerful, tight music

Perhaps the starting point for those interested in black metal.
While not the first Black Metal album by a long shot, Immortal's Sons Of Northern Darkness is an excellent starting point for anyone intrested for it has all the key elements, the buzzing guitar riff's, blastbeats and lyric's about Grim and Frostbitten kingdoms. However it is also well produced and a lot more accessible than many other Black Metal albums which may seem a little too harsh for unaccustomed ears for instance Darkthrone and early Bathory albums (which you should no doubt purchase). Anyway Immortal's Sons Of Northern Darkness is a excellent collection of Black Metal which I thoroughly recommend.

UN-believable.... one of THE best extreme/melodic black metal cds of ALL time
The first Immortal CD i bought was "at the heart of winter" which is a total classic also i may add. and after that i bought the others, and i now have heard or own all of their cds. but i wasnt ready for how [...] BRILLIANT this cd was going to be.I primarily like heavy/thrash/power but i do have a soft spot for immortal and a select few other black bands. and when i popped this CD in, it was like a mix thrash heavy and black, and i was completley blown away. i was in love after the first listen.every song is better than the previous. the only one i dont like is demonium, and its still okay... but doesnt really fit in with the rest of the CDmy fave tracks are "one by one, in my kingdom cold, antarctica, beyond the north waves and tyrants"beyond the north waves is a musical journey, its one of the most fascinatingly atmospheric songs ive EVER heard...this CD really is a buy or die my friends...a future classic.. wait, its already a classic.
