Danny The Champion of the World
After reading the book to my grandson, we watched this uplifting and touching film with no fear on my part that there was going to be any gratuitous violence, sex or innapropriate languge. There was one mild swear word, but nothing that any exasperated parent has not uttered! Yes, a little dated, but so are lots of well-loved and still-viewed films..ref Sound of Music,Brief Encounter,E.T etc etc). Roald Dahl's books are beloved by children and throughout my teaching career I used this film in the classroom many times to encourage reluctant boy-readers towards the written word. Would that there were more films of this uncomplicated calibre, instead of the usual American computer-generated images with expensive special effects and innapropriate content, to which our young people are now subjected.OK.. that may be a generalisation but many parents will sympathise with that view. A list of great actors completed the experience. So glad to have found the DVD as I had lost my original video copy.Quality of the film wasn't too good... a little dark and indistinct in parts but the content more than made up for this. The 5 star review was given for the content.

Made for 1989 television, 4:3 ratio is all you need
This is a wonderfully-realised television version of Roald Dahl's novel. It evokes a golden age of pastoral 1950s England as Dahl does in his book. The chemistry here between real-life father and son Jeremy and Samuel Irons rings true, and Robbie Coltrane's performance creates a suitably vulgar, nasty and stupid Victor Hazell for the viewer to hate.I would suggest that the admittedly upsetting bloodsport scenes at the film's opening are an essential part of underlining the stupidity and cruelty of men like Hazell and what they like to do for fun, which was surely one of Dahl's key points for comment in the original novel. These scenes are not enough to take away from the film's appropriateness or enjoyability for a family audience, which scores highly indeed.Regarding Judy Lewis' comment on the aspect ratio of this transfer, the Internet Movie Database lists the original aspect ratio for this film as 1.33:1 (or 4:3). This was a made-for-television film in 1989, so 4:3 would have indeed been the original aspect ratio for this film, and no widescreen edition could therefore exist without severe cropping. This means you are missing nothing of the film with this transfer.

I'd forgotten just what a lovely film this was
I worked (indirectly) for the publishers of Roald Dahl at the time and as a company we got a couple of invites to a preview screening when this came out and I was lucky enough to be selected to go along. When I saw a brief clip on one of the shows around the Roald Dahl centenary earlier this year I remembered it and so ordered it.It's a lovely, friendly feeling film - and the casting of Sam Irons to play Danny (alongside his Father Jeremy as his Dad, and his Grandfather the marvellous Cyril Cusak as the kindly doctor) is inspired. With cartoon villains and typical Roald Dahl humour running throughout what's not to like? This may not be as technically advanced as the recent BFG, but it's made with real heart and soul and that rings through the whole production.I'd thoroughly recommend it.

Did you know this is where the BFG first appeared?
Read this as a young lad and remembered how much I'd enjoyed it, so when our grandson mentioned liking Roald Dahl I did a search and spotter this, just had to buy it (actually bought the book and the audible book). It's still as entertaining for me as an adult as it was many moons ago. Grandson is loving it, we even did a read along with the book while playing the audible copy (took me right back to being at school and the teacher reading a chapter to us on a Friday afternoon). I'd say it appeals to the boys because of the mechanical nature of his job, the adventures and all that side of the story. I'm guessing the family aspects and people observations will be more aimed at those girls who aren't big fans of petrol engines.

All ages
This made for tv film is adapted from the book written by Roald Dahl and is certainly a family affair. Jeremy and his eldest son Sam play father and son (you can definitely tell they're real life father and son) Who take on a bully played by Robbie Coltrane and basically run him out of town. Cyril Cusack makes an appearance along with Jimmy Nail. It's suitable for all the family and is set in the beautiful english countryside. Well worth a watch

Classic Children's Story
Having read the story to my 5 year old daughter many, many times, I was a little worried to watch somebody else's version, but with quality actors such as Jeremy Irons it was a joy to view. It was sensitively directed with some humour and appropriate tension. Highly recommended for children and adults who get sick af watching violent films!

So muss Kindheit aussehen!
