IT COULDN'T BE MORE SIMPLE, AND EFFECTIVE TOO!
Burning 'cured' logs whilst we're still allowed, it is vital to have as near moisture free material that you can find -- and in doing so, your stove won't get wrecked. My recent experience of using a meter was with one that not only tested logs, but also plaster and brickwork. Some hardwoods are nearly as tough as iron, so they burn slowly and kick out heat both at the same time, but would this item cope? Never! It not only ate batteries (and they had to be the expensive lithium variety) but failed totally within months, although it did have a 3 year guarantee ... a so called German product, which you'd expect to be tough and well made, but in tiny, tiny letters, it said on the pack 'Made in China'. THIS REPLACEMENT, however comes from the same sources, BUT is both simple to use and for grades of different wood ONLY. It's sturdy and well up to the job -- I know because I tested it straight away on a new delivery of logs, and then on some which has been seasoning for over a year. I now know that up to 20% moisture has been 'lost' during that period, so the latter now meets all the rules and regulations. Yes, the perfect tool that every log burner must have. TOTALLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Good value for money
Slightly annoying that no batteries are included: two illustrations on the product page show 4xAAA batteries - in fairness, the text doesn't mention them, but it's easy to be misled by the pictures. Having got that off my chest, I'd say that this is a perfectly good damp meter and very good value for money. It's designed for the wood industry, so it has 4 settings for different types of wood, giving 4 slightly different readings, but quite honestly in the domestic situation you just want an approximate and qualitative reading, and whether recently deluged wallpaper that's starting to dry out reads 93 or 95% humidity, compared to 4 or 5% on unaffected wall a few feet away, isn't crucial in my view. It's fine!

Incredibly easy to use and perfect for checking moisture content of logs!
Simple and very easy to use. I mainly use hardwood offcuts (oak, walnut and wedge) in my stoves which have a super low moisture content as they’re kiln dried. I do however occasionally use split logs when I need to, from my local country store or logs I’ve split myself. When using those it’s imperitive they have a moisture content of less than 20% and this is ideal for checking that.

A good moisture measuring tool
I bought this because of the reasonable price and it's use is to measure the moisture content in my logs. It has 4 setting's, I assume for different wood types - my instructions were foreign, no English? Anyway I have had no problems, happy with its accuracy.I don't want to do this tool down, I would suggest it is suitable for use in any timber type application, carpentry, etc.

Great quality and good value
This reader has been invaluable in helping us check whether our fire wood is dry enough to us in our wood burning stove. Would highly recommend.

Good for measuring moisture in firewood
Needed it to measure moisture in firewood. It does do it well, but the there is no guidance what percentage of moisture in wood constitutes it as being dry enough to burn efficiently. I know you can look it up on the internet, but it would be very helpful to at least know for each calibrated wood groups what is classified as wet or dry. Other than that it is vey easy to use.

Don't burn green wood
Used to test whether logs are sufficiently seasoned before burning. Can't test the accuracy without a second calibrated meter, but it certainly tells the difference between new and seasoned wood. Has four sensitivity settings for different types of wood. I set it to a slightly more sensitive setting to be on the safe side. Could be improved if it remembered the setting, but that's not a show stopper. One of my more useful purchases.

Difficult to use and not sure readings are accurate
It is quite hard to push the prongs into some logs and it wont give a reading unless fully pushed in. I think whether you can push the prongs in or not is probably a better indicator of how moist the wood is.
