Sam the Sea Cow (Reading Rainbow)

Highly Recommend for children of all ages- teaches environmentalism and love for the LGBT community. Allowed me to learn to love myself.

Engaging illustrations and story teaching about manatees and protecting nature and the creatures who inhabit it.

We purchased this book for our 7-year old who needed to do a school report on a sea animal. She enjoyed reading about "Sam" and found a lot of useful information in the book. The illustrations were charming as well as accurate (from what we could tell based on internet photographs we compared it to). An interesting creature and a fun story.Nice book, though it only gets 4 stars because even though the illustrations were well-done and the creatures cute, the colors used seemed a little washed out. For a child, more vibrancy would have been good.

I remember this from Reading Rainbow as a kid - it made me ask to "adopt a manatee" for a birthday. I was delighted to share Sam's story with my children on a trip to visit their grandfather in Fort Meyers. A great book to read before going to Manatee Park, going out boating (to explain the importance of going slow), and to teach them about a mammal unique to Florida. A nice story with a lot of educational value.

My son loves Manatees and absolutely loves this book, great story and the kids love reading it all the time!

I've ordered many books for my kids, and I must say that the drawings in this one are astonishingly remarkable. The story is good in itself and quite long but also very didactic (too much?).J'ai acheté plusieurs livres en anglais pour mes enfants et je dois dire que celui-là dépasse mes attentes en termes d'esthétique. C'est tout simplement remarquable! L'histoire est sympa et assez longue. Elle est par ailleurs très (trop?) didactique puisqu'elle sensibilise les enfants aux épreuves foncièrement humaines que les lamantins rencontrent tout au long de leur vie.
