Be wary - not hard after heat treat
I am no expert knife maker but I have made quite a few in my lifetime. I am 51 years old and have been sharpening knives since my father bought me my first knife when I was 10. I made a small little kiridashi for my wife to use in her crafting projects and I am so disappointed with this steel. After making a little design on what she wanted I cut out the design and rough formed it to shape with a bench grinder, making sure not to overheat the steel by placing the blade in water every pass. Once the profile was where I wanted it I put in a little makeshift file jig and filed in the bevel. After getting the edge down to about 0.025" I proceded to heat treat. I brought the knife up to temp and normalized twice letting it cool to the touch each time. Then I brought it up to temp (right around 1490F to 1500F and quickly qenched in Parks 50. Seemed ok and even tested with a cheap file and seemed to skate across so I thought I was good to go. I then tempered the blade at 400F for 1 hour, twice, letting it cool to room temp each time.I did some hand sanding and brought the main body of the knife up to about 400 grit. I then proceeded to sharpen using a course and fine diamond stone, and finished off with an extra fine Arkansas whetstone. Got the edge about as good as I could get and still wasn't satisfied. I then proceeded to hand sand the bevel up to 2000 grit. I then hand buffed the bevel with a leather stop (I am a hobby leather crafter).Well, I am not sure what this steel is although at purchase it said 1095. I have made quite a few knives over the past year using 1095 and 01. All of them turned out great, even the 01 after soaking at 1500F for 15 min.I am not sure what went wrong. Like I have said I have made many knives from 1095 as well as 01 and have never had a knife not keep it's edge. This one, the edge dent's like its made of aluminium. Really disappointed to be honest.I have ordered some more steel as well as some other knife making products from Jantz which will be here tomorrow (1/25/19) so we will see what happens then. I will also be making another kiridashi using the same method I just described and see if maybe I did something wrong. In conclusion I would really stay away from this product as I am not sure what they sent me was actually 1095. Stick with known steels from reputable places if you need to ensure quality. Just my 2 cents.

Worked fine
I did not use this for making a knife, so I could not comment about forging. I did use for another project, it is a hard piece of steel. I did drill it and use a hacksaw to cut it.Harder than regular steel.

Heat til non magnetic before quench
Good steel, edge holds like a champ after heat treat and tempering. If you’re new in the blade making hobby, this is a forgiving high carbon steel that will make for a good blade!
