powerful!
I bought this to drill holes in 4 oak whiskey barrels . It was very powerful! the point pulled the drill bit into the wood very fast. The oak is so dense I could not keep the drill going, it bound up . I drilled a pilot hole so the point would not pull so hard. It worked perfectly! I am sure if the wood was pine, it would have worked better. But, This bit worked better than any other bit i have tried.

super fast drilling
Wow, super fast hole drilling. I was installing collar ties in my 2 car garage roof for hurricane / tornado protection. I used 3/8" carriage bolts to go through my 2 x 6 which I was attaching to my 2 x 8. I predrilled the 2 x 6 before attaching them to my 2 x 8 so I only had to drill through one 2 x 8 - 3 times on each side 12 feet in the air. Using my battery powered drill with a standard bit. It was very slow and painfull in my shoulders and arms drilling over my head and to left and right side. Very sore, I am 68 and not a contractor. This was a DIY project. IRWIN SPEEDBOR drilled through the 2 x 8 in seconds, extremely fast. This bit saved my arms and shoulders and allowed me to get a lot more done much faster and I did not have to take as many breaks. Thank you Irwin! James P. Nemeth USMC Retired

Great bit for the money. Not for power drills except with extreme caution!
This bit is great for what it is intended to do! Bits that have a screw on the end that helps pull the cutting edges into the wood are really helpful for HAND drills because they are a lot less work for the user. Otherwise, you'd have to put a lot more force on the drill to get it to bore. It's essentially a modified auger bit. Drilling by hand is a lot more effort than pulling a trigger, obviously, but, it allows you to go slowly, accurately and gives a really nice straight cut, if you are careful. This bit does this really well, though it could be sharper from the factory. It's a bit rough, but for this price you shouldn't expect a top quality bit. You could easily pay upwards of $30 for a top end auger bit to do what this one does pretty well. So, sharpen it up yourself carefully and you will be glad you did. However, if you use this with a POWER drill - it can take off on you because the screw will pull the drill bit into the wood REALLY fast, or puil the board into the drill if it isn't clamped down securely. Neither of these options is a good one for the user or the project. And these type bits cut fast! So, you can really create some dangerous situations if you misuse this type drill bit. I thought that needed saying as there seems to be some confusion about this bit in the reviews. Many people are not familiar with this type of bit or how to use it properly. If you want to use it with a power drill, make SURE it is a high torque, variable speed one and go REALLY slow. This is a bit that cuts fast at hand speeds. Otherwise, the drill will do what it does on its own and you will be along for the ride. This is used completely differently from a spade bit where you want it going fast. Definitely do not use this type of drill bit in a drill press! Bits with this type shank easily wobble loose in a drill press designed for round shafted bits. Also, can be very, very dangerous....That said, I managed to repeatedly cut through 3 inches of solid pine with this bit using a pawn store hand drill and was amazed at how fast it cut. I was sweating after the first few, but it wasn't too bad. And it's summer... I'm building a cheap and very clever modern version of an English Joiner's bench a guy has a video and free rough plans for on youtube and bought holdfasts that require a deep 15/16" hole. The bench is amazingly solid, but takes some work to build, obviously, and I modified it to suit me.... But, a really solid workbench for less than $100 in wood and bolts is pretty good and it will do everything I need it to do really well. I didn't have the right sized bit, so bought this one. Very glad I did. That's a lot of big holes to drill. And they need to be straight. It worked like a charm. Great bit, really. Well worth the money if you need one. The holdfasts work great, too! So, no complaints. Be careful out there.... Power tools are awesome effort savers, but they are dangerous as all get out if you don't know what you are doing, or you have the wrong tool for the job. FWIW... YMMV

Simply excellent
I seriously misused this drill bit. I drilled over 200 holes into a 5 foot diameter tree stump (to speed up decay) and I only had to sharpen this bit once. I did notice that the bit bogged down at about 3 to 4 inches deep. It did an excellent job of clearing the chips (vertically upwards). Highly recommend. Easy to sharpen with a "Diamond Knife Sharpening Steel Rod12 Inch" for the curved part and any diamond flat file for the flat part.

Great bits
I recently purchased the IRWIN SPEEDBOR Tri Flute Wood Drill Bit in the 1-inch size, and it has been a great choice. The bit slices through even the toughest wood like butter, providing clean and precise holes every time. Would definitely buy again!

Extremely fast
These drill very fast, and they can surprise you by pulling into the wood at an angle if you aren't ready. I haven't found faster auger bits. The exit hole can be a bit rough, but if you want a clean cut you shouldn't be using these anyway. They do get dull faster than I would like, and they seem like they would be difficult to sharpen. But at this price, they are also easily replaced.

It does NOT have 1/4" hexagonal shaft
While the product ad on Amazon says it does; It does NOT have 1/4" hexagonal shaft. The actual product packaging says that it has a 3/8" hexagonal shaft, but that is NOT true either. The shaft is hexagonal, but the size of it is more like 8.5mm. If it were 3/8" it would be 9.525mm or .375 inch. The size that it really is means that it is very wobbly when held within a 3/8" hex socket, a condition that could be dangerous when drilling.I wanted this to be the bit that advertising told me that it was, so I found a 6 point deep socket sized to 8mm and 1/4" drive. Then I filed the sides of the odd shaft on this bit, evenly, until it fit inside of that socket securely and without wobble. Once there, I welded a 1/4" hexagonal to 1/4" square drive socket adapter to the 8mm socket. Now, I effectively have the bit that this was advertised to be.Don't buy it unless you're prepared to do as I have, or if you will use it in an ordinary drill chuck.

Effective
Used this to drill out some stumps from recently cut elm trees to break down with salts. Hard wood but this worked perfectly (although the blue paint didn't exactly survive the exercise intact).

Best quality for the price.
I've tried a few of these self feed auger bits, theres better quality and also cheaper but these are very good for the price and better than some that cost more. The Milwaukee bits are more than double and these would last nearly as long.
