Perfect for your budding scientist!
Absolutely terrific for young enquiring minds, the design of the eyepieces is perfect for children, nice big binocular type viewing ports, and really clear good quality glass optics, I would have adored this as a child! I got this for my nephew to experience when he was brought round by my brother, hard to tell who was more excited my nephew or my brother! The extras that come with it are all child-friendly. A chunky pipette, an observation capsule for ants and the type, and a chunky pair of tweezers. This is a well thought out educational gift by a company that obviously studies what children do! If you have a child in your family that you want to inspire then this is the perfect Christmas present!

Microscope
This is a nice little beginners microscope for young children. It is sturdy and chunky an will withstand the inevitable knocks. It comes with a few bits and pieces to mess about with. The microscope itself doesn't magnify things hugely - but I don't think that is the point... I think this 'toy' is to introduce younger children to the idea and concepts of science and magnification. My youngest has enjoyed playing around with it and keeps bringing bits of 'nature' from outside to examine!....

Perfectly made for the age range, shame about the lack of magnification
It's got everything going for it except one thing. It's chunky for less experienced hands, tough, easy to use (huge eyepieces), comes with those essential scientific needs - strong plastic tweezers, a super thick pipette/bulb and a dish for wet samples. What could be better for a 4 year old's first messy science experiment?Well, kids have fantastic eyes. They can accommodate (focus) really close - as we get older, we gradually lose this ability. Look at the barbs of a feather - just hold it closer! I carefully checked the magnification of this and reckon it's 1.5x, not 10x. Even with my 60 year old myopic eyes, I could see as much detail without the "microscope" than with it.So it's a toy, a pretend microscope. I can't even call it a magnifier, as the magnification is so low as to be a joke.To be of any use, it needs a genuine 10x or 20x magnification. On the other hand, kids have a great imagination, so they can certainly use it to PLAY at using a microscope, but they won't be able to SEE anything they can't already see.

Lots of features but limited magnification
As a starter set to get into science, this is brilliant - very robust, very easy to use with lots of handy accessories to get you examining the world. It’s only downside - but a fairly major one for a microscope - is that it has very limited magnification - more super magnifying glass than microscope. But that said, to get a young child into understanding there is another world out there and to learn in a safe and simple way about microscopes, it’s really good.

Might encourage budding scientists
This microscope for young children comes in a large box containing a sturdy plastic microscope about 15 cm high, a plastic petri dish to put samples in, a bulb operated pipette for transferring liquids and some large tweezers. It does NOT come with the 3 AAA batteries needed to power the instrument's light. Aimed at children from 4 to 7 years, these are satisfying and solidly made items for budding scientists. The microscope is easy for children to operate by themselves - simply place small items under the lens and turn the knob to move closer or further away. The binocular top is comfortable and large enough for a child to get a steady view with both eyes. However, the maximum magnification is only up to 10x - this is enough to make objects look bigger and to show just about show the whorls on your fingertips, but insufficient for exciting discoveries. The pack comes with 10 laminated full colour cards showing photos of objects you might collect and examine, and on the reverse it shows the same objects as you will see them under the lens. The accompanying leaflet has educational notes for parents in a range of languages explaining for example the different parts of a flower and their functions. We like the fact that this kit can be used independently by a child under adult supervision; that the notes encourage you both to go out and about to collect real things to examine more closely; and it is sturdily made. However the level of enlargement is rather disappointing and it should really be called a magnifier rather than a microscope.

Better magnification required, maybe 20x
I think this is quite a good set and I think lots of kids (and adults) will like the idea behind this. You are supplied with a child-friendly microscope and a petri dish, pipette and tweezers. It requires 3x triple A batteries for the light on the microscope. Sadly the microscope only magnifies 10x and would be much better if it was stronger as I think children would find that more exciting. I think a magnifying glass could be used, too, out in the field, so the child can see the insects etc in situ. The microscope has a control knob that you turn at the side so that the magnification can be altered. There are leaflets included for educational information. I think the idea behind it is sound and could definitely get 4 to7-year-olds interested in nature and seeing things close-up, but sadly the magnification lets it down.

Ten stars from my 4.5 year old
I was nervous to purchase this since at the time it had no reviews, but I'm so glad I took a chance. I asked my science obsessed 4.5 year old how many stars to give this microscope and she says TEN! It's easy for her to independently use without being too kiddy. The cards that come with it are sturdy, bright, and full of ideas. I do wish the magnification was a bit stronger, but it is actually a higher power than many other preschool appropriate microscopes. Overall, this is a perfect first microscope!
