I haven't had any problems. The key Is a unique and maybe it's not as susceptible to problems with dirt. Anyway it always works very smoothly for me after more than a year.

Q: Can the mounting case be attached to the bike’s water bottle mounting studs?

Yes, it's easy, even bolts included. Measure up though! For install on seat tube bottle studs, be sure you have double the length space for clearance of the top-tube. Foldy-Compact didn't fit on my bike due to sloping top-tube, so have to use the velcro option on toptube.
