Supernatural: Season 4 [DVD] [2005] [2009]

Unnaturally Good
Supernatural has always been one of those shows that shouldn't be taken too sseriously. It is no Battlstar Galactica or The Wire. But nor should it be. It is fun and crazy and ridiculous, and for 3 seasons it continued to be so. Every season got a little better and by the forth it had grown into something unstoppable. Its mythology had been expertly weaved into the superb episodes, the characters were real to the viewer by that time and the narrative had taken on a life of its own. By the end of season 3 things were bad. Dean was dragged to Hell quite horribly and Sam could somehow repel Lilith. Season 4 however upped the game considerably and stands as one of the finest in the shows history with a final twist that, once again sets up the boys for the next season but in truly stunning style. Here are a few of the highlights and why they are so good:Lazarus Rising - Excellent opening episode. Dean's inexplicable reappearance, the unexplained phenomena that seems to follow him around, Sam's shady dealings with the strange 'girlfriend', Pamela's blinding and the awesome truth behind who Castiel is makes this THE strongest season opener ever.In The Beginning - Using Castiel as a plot device, the creators experiment with a time-travel episode that beats the hell out of most of the normal episodes. More jaw-dropping revelations expound as we see Mary Winchester's true beginnings and the reason why Sam was chosen. The story arc is well plotted in this season and Azazel's quest is centre stage, without ever letting the audience in on it. Brilliant.Metamorphosis - a near-perfect monster of the weeker with a stand-out performance from the actor playing the Rugaru. It perfectly studies the grey areas of the 2 brothers' work and where they draw the line. Ultimately they are there to help people and at what point does a monster become so? Heavy, dark stuff. This is echoed in Sam's own decent into monsterhood.Yellow Fever - for a hilarious turn from Ackles as a petrified Dean. The scene with the cat in the locker room is literally laugh out loud funny. On The head of a Pin - excellent performance from Ackles again as he is forced to torture Alastair and another twist as to who is bumping off angels. The Monster at the End of this Book - pure X-Files (GOOD X-Files) episode with the brothers' finding their hunting lives written down, letter for letter in a series of books by a nervous, alcoholic writer. The fun comes from playing with the tropes of narrative. How can they change destiny when it has alrady been written? They can't is the answer, but they can add a denouement of their own! And how Chuck can document their lives is another great twist that makes perfect sense in the arena of the heavenly war that is being played out.Lucifer Rising - the culmination of the entire season, all the threads being tied and all the character development reaching a head. It ALL matters here. We finally find out why Azazel was feeding demon blood to children all those years ago when the series started. Sam and Dean's relationship is stretched to breaking point and beyond. And the epiphany of Azazel's plan was pure genius. It all made sense and was for one purpose only, to resurrect his father, Lucifer. By the end of this episode, the world and your nerves are in tatters.Season 5 keeps this pace up, throwing more and more into the pot and creating a truly heroic story. Season 4 worked because of the tension between the brothers, the inclusion of Angels and the other side and the savvy narrative that left clues throughout, and pulled them all together at the end, together with the characterisation and acting and directing and set design - basically everything. If you haven't seen this show yet, I recommend you begin - it's powerful good.

to hell and back again literally
to start off with i know a lot of problems have occurred with the boxset up to now but i bought this last week and have sat a checked through and the problems have now been sorted, it is no longer just part 1&2 repackaged its the complete season along with all the advertised goodies-deleted scenes, commentaries, heaven and hell documentaries, gag reel and of course jensen ackles famous eye of the tiger at the end of episode 6 'yellow fever' so seriously dont hestitate to buy the boxset anymore, just goes to prove that if a retailer lets you down if you make the complaint something will hopefully get done and now it has and couldn't be happier with the boxset :Dseason 4 sees the return of dean from his 4 month spell in hell in 'lazarus rising' which is as always a stunning opener to the season.season 4 sees the introduction of the amazing character castiel, the angel on deans shoulder 'who gripped him tight and raised him from perdition' and along with the other angels fighting to avert the apocalypse strip down the conception of fluffy winged lovey dovey angels and portrays them how they were in the bible-warriors,soldiers of god.season 4 doesn't let up and is proof how this show ups its game with every season and the bar has been set to a new high here as the brothers race to stop lillith from her very own dark crusade to break the 66 seals and bring on the apocalyse with the release of lucifer himself.the acting has risen to new depths and the personal storylines between the brothers is more intense than ever and shows them truly strifing and walking down different roads through the choices they make.episodes worthy of particular merit are : lazarus rising, are you there god? its me sam winchester,in the beginning,i know what you did last summer, heaven and hell,on the head of a pin,the monster at the end of the book, when the levee breaks and the finale lucifer rising.season 4 is just impressing, entertaining and thrilling on every level and i would thoroughly recommend this to anyone, the only slight disappointment is the retreating of the awesome rock soundtracks throughout the series that is ordinarilly a trademark of supernatural, however this series takes a more serious turn in music,plot,writing-the works(of course being supernatural it has its silly and funny episodes as always).all in all an amazing series and its good that the region 2 boxset lives up to the series now

One of the best TV shows out there
Just rewatched the complete Season 4 on BluRay and I'm still completely stunned by the awesomeness of this show. It has everything: suspense, comedy, sadness, horror, craziness and surprise. The writers of this show never seem to run out of brilliant ideas. Personally I think this is the best season of Supernatural so far.First of all there is the overall storyline with Dean returning from hell with help from the angel Castiel. Dean's main task - appointed by the angels - is to prevent Lilith from breaking the 66 seals to free Lucifer from hell. Meanwhile Sam has changed a lot into his darker self and gets trained by the demon Ruby to fight other demons and kill them.During the season we get to know a lot of sinister angels and demons and their true objectives. There are lots of episodes with "the monster of the week" where Sam and Dean team up again for a monster hunt like in the good old days, but there are also a lot of episodes with the main storyline going on. It's a good mix of funny and scary episodes and for me that's what makes this show so extremely worthwhile. Each episode is like a grab bag, you never really know what you get next ;), and they still know how to surprise you in all kinds of ways. The picture quality of the BluRays is good, Supernatural is certainly not a show with vivid colours but still the colours come out great and the picture is very crisp. Can't say much about the audio quality though since I don't have a surround system.I can warmly recommend this and all the other Seasons of Supernatural to you, it's a hell of a ride ;) !

Disks were copies and would not play
When disks arrived, they would not play on any of my DVD players. I tried on several different ones. On the actual disks the supernatural sticker wasn't even in color and was just stuck on. Nothing like the sets you would buy in a store like Best Buy or Walmart

AWESOME
