Bicarbonate of Soda: A Very Versatile Natural Substance

This little book is a bountiful harvest of ideas for baking, cooking, household cleaning, medicinal and other uses for bicarbonate of soda. Ms. Briggs' historical account of the uses of bicarbonate of soda as Egyptian embalming aids, part of Roman glassmaking, and soap making was very interesting.The recipes in the back of the book were marvelous, too, including the brief accounts immediately preceding them. Did you know that bicarb can be used as a fabric softener or a mild bleach? You can also unclog a drain with it and use it to melt snow and ice without harming your tender garden plants. Having trouble with pesky ants? Run a line of bicarbonate of soda along the door jamb to keep ants at bay.Great gift idea for the woman who thinks she has everything.

A strange book. The basic message is hammered home page after page, when in fact it would have been sufficient to give a few recipes and a list of tasks for which the mixtures are suitable. i.e. Method 1, sprinkle it on, Method 2, make a paste and spread it, Method 3, make a soaking solution. The author makes some pointless comments such as: "since I won't use the latter [superglue] because of the smell and chemicals involved, I can't say I have any experience of this technique" and, "I've never had to deal with these, but apparently mixing equal parts... etc. For heaven's sake, this is meant to be a helpful guide: you DON'T include something unless you KNOW it works. The second half of the book is taken up with cookery recipes, which I can only hope the author bothered to try out before passing them on.

The book arrived on time.It is very informative, with the many uses for bicarbonate of soda.The good thing is it's a natural substance.One chapter has a good selection of recipes.The final chapter 'fun activities'Well worth buying.

Quite amazing what bicarbonate of soda can be used for. My father used to say 'a pinch of bicarb' if he had a touch of indigestion, but my goodness it has very many uses. Well worth a look.
