Very advanced do it yourself project
I just completed a project with three of these mini pot lamps in a kit by Alico. There was a user trap in that if the wire harness is assembled incorrectly, the connectors cannot be taken apart without special tools. But from my experience in the electronics industry I knew that connector pins, even when locked in place can be removed with a special tool.I made a special tool by turning a nail down to the correct diameter on my metal lathe. I then drilled a hole in the end of the nail. The hollow nail slipped over the pin and pressed back in the deployed prongs, so the pin and it's wire could be withdrawn from the connector backshell. The mounting hole for the lamp must be made with a 2 1/8" hole saw. A 2" is too small for the lamps and a 2 1/4" or 55mm hole saw is too big and the mounting holes in the lamps flange will be over the hole. Even with the 2 1/8" holes, there is barely enough room for the 0.1" diameter wood screws. The 9 flat head wood screws supplied are the smallest I have ever seen and appear to be #0 size with the 1/16" drill used for pre drilling the holes and 1/8" for the shank. Still the holes are so close to the 2 1/8" hole that there is some break through. I installed these under magnification. Although these screws are tiny, a Philips #0 or #00 screwdriver will fit. You may have a set for working on your eye glasses. I sawed the 2.125" holes with the mill, but drilled the 0.1" screw holes with the drill press. In order to make a channel to get the wires out the end of the mounting board I used a table saw.In order to make a channel to hide the handfuls of wires and connectors, I used a metalworking vertical milling machine. The 12 Volt wires used by Alico take up more room than the lights themselves. The spaghetti of wires I pressed into two 6" x 6" x 1/2" chambers and then covered the chambers with card board, and then taped it shut. The bezels have a metal plating on plastic that will pull off if tape is ever applied in fixturing. The halogen bulbs should not be touched, but if they are, the instructions say to clean with alcohol and then wipe with a lint free cloth.I also cleaned the inside of the bezels this way before snapping them onto the lamps.
