The Big Three and Me

Unknown History
What an outstanding book! The Big Three, Palmer, Player & Nicklaus, made the headlines, but Billy was the man to watch. This is the behind the scenes of possibly the best player in the 60's.

Billy Casper was the most under rated golfer in history!
Very high quality book binding and cover! Added bonus is the book was autographed by Billy Casper! There is nothing of the book i dont like as it is very well written by Casper himself. You get great insights into the game of golf and the other players of the time such as Palmer and Nicklaus. Great information about what a talented and formidable competitor Mickey Wright was even as a junior player. She was out driving very good male players when she was a teenager! A fantastic historical rememberance of the game of golf!

A great story from a personal perspective
I followed Billy Caspar around Colonial in the 1970s the first time I watched a professional tournament - not exclusively, but I remember him as one of the top players - Jay Boros and Chi Chi and others. I picked up this book when I heard he passed away. This is a great read, especially if you know enough about golf to appreciate its clear expression of how he approached the game. The time of the pros all driving around pulling trailers was a long time ago and much has changed since, from the focus on the values and integrity of the game to the focus on money and the difference in how the fans interact with the players - just look at the 16th at the Phoenix Open. Oh, I still like it, but it was fun when there were no ropes and the players were "Mr. Casper" and "Mr. Hogan." This book chronicles that change from one who was there on the front lines.

Read for golf and for life
I always thought Billy Casper was great - I pulled for him. But I never realized what got him there and what helped him stay there. His understated philosophy about golf and life is really remarkable and impressive. The simple lessons he teaches will certainly stay with me - both in golf and in life - 'Hit your straight club', 'lay up on the difficult par three', 'family and church are most important', and 'money has changed the game and kept many players from becoming true shotmakers'. I bought this on Kindle, but I'm going to find a real hard copy somewhere and add it to my library. It is written much like Billy played - understated and with just enough humor to keep you honest. Read this one.

Highly Recommended for Pro Golf History Fans
I'm finding "The Big Three and Me" to be an interesting and readable autobiography about one of the most--if not THE most--underrated pro golfers in history. Prior to reading this book, I knew nothing about Billy Casper prior to reading this book. His autobiography fleshes-out Billy Casper the man. He was an interesting individual (re recently died), and his golf showdowns with "the Big Three" of golf (Palmer, Nicklaus and Player) and other contemporaries makes his story all the more interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys pro golf history, especially encompassing the late 1950's thru the early 1980's.

A must-read for any serious golf fan
While the book is not well-written from a literary standpoint, it is a must read for serious golf fans. I am sure that no one knows nearly as much about Billy Casper as will be learned by reading this book. It is very easy to read. There are too many statistics, in an effort by the writer to pump up Mr. Casper's legacy, but it you don't focus on that but rather the "stories" it is delightful. It is true that the book is about a Mormon golfer, written by a Mormon, it is not preachy - but more explanatory about who the man is. And he is a Great Man!

A LITTLE DISAPPOINTING
IT'S OBVIOUS THAT BILLY MARCHES TO THE BEAT OF A DIFFERENT DRUMMER.. NOT PLAYING MORE OFTEN IN THE BRITISH OPEN WAS A HUGE MISTAKE.. IT ALSO APPEARS THAT WORKING MORE EFFECTIVELY ON HIS TEE-TO-GREEN-GAME AT THE PRACTICE RANGE WOULD HAVE PUT HIM IN THE "MAJOR" HUNT MUCH MORE OFTEN AS GOOD AS HIS SHORT GAME APPEARED TO BE.... QUITE HONESTLY HIS MAJOR RECORD TELLS US THAT HE DIDN'T BELONG WITH "THE BIG THREE".. I DON'T FEEL HE WAS SLIGHTED BY OTHERS AS HE SEEMS TO FEEL... HE HAS MANY AWARDS TO PROVE OTHERWISE..
