Refreshingly Different - no play by numbers here...
I can certainly understand why this book divides opinion, but after spending some time going through it I find it has made me think about the instrument in a more critical way. I am a mathematician by trade and really should hate this book due to the esoteric and fuzzy definitions used, however I have got a lot out of answering some of the questions for myself rather than having it spoon fed. If you approach it with the expectation that you will have to do some extra research (there are plenty of forums threads dealing with help on some of the more obscure matters) you will get a lot out of it and will develop your own voice. It does remind me a little of Pat Martino's approach in that the nature of the guitar as a distinct instrument is central to the teaching, so if you like Linear Expressions etc. then you will certainly like this.Be warned - its addictive and only open if you have a good hour or more to spend as its not a book I find i can dip in and out quickly. As its not called Beginning Guitarist, Mick Goodrick excuses himself from any introductory comments on theory, so can't be used easily if you know a few chords and pentatonics.

This book consists of organized useful information for advanced music concepts applied to guitar
This book consists of organized useful information for advanced music concepts applied to guitar. It is a well written, highly instructive, and carefully designed workbook for any guitarist seeking to raise his or her level of musicianship. It definitely merits recognition as being among the better books of this type available and certainly worth the price. Recommended.

This is an excellent book. It is a book for the student of the guitar, who already has a reasonable playing level and wants to reach the next stage. This book is used by students at music colleges etc.

Bargain!
A lifetime's study in one book.If you think you are a hot guitarist think again. This book will open up great chasms of new possibilities to explore, learn and master.I am definitely gaining a deeper, more thorough understanding of the instrument as I read this book.

The Thinking Guitarists Book
In my opinion this book isn't best suited to those most in need of direct guidance. If you have the patience and initiative to work at this book you will get better of course but as it states it's a do it yourself book and has years and years worth of information. There are lots of other concepts about musicianship discussed too, all posed to create a thought process as opposed to providing answers. This is a good book for those who can already play pretty well but learned the guitar without understanding much about music theory (which is alot of people) and with alot of work will make you a musician as opposed to someone who can just play guitar. A little philosphical thought is needed too but nothing to complicated.

A great book for beginners to experts
As a beginner on the guitar, I found so much interest, and common sense in this book that it encouraged me to persevere. I am not much further (in my learning) than the first few pages, but the often controversial and stimulating text is well worth while.

#1 guitar book
One of the best guitar books ever published. It won't do the work for you, but it will point you in directions you never considered. If you're hungry to learn Goodrick will help you take yourself places that you never thought possible.

Deep Guitar Thoughts
When we learn to write spoken language we learn letters then words then sentences but with guitar we start with sentences and this makes it difficult to go back and fill in the blanks. Here's a cool thing I learned the first time I put some of this information into practice and it frankly changed my guitar life.- with the premise of playing on one string, and only one string, on the G string (because we typically have a harder time visualizing all the fret names there) play a Bb scale starting with open G and ascend to the end of the fret-board and back. After a few minuets you will "see" the notes on that string. Say the notes out loud as you move.( G (open string) A Bb C D Eb F G A Bb c d Eb F G A Bb etc)- now, on that string and only that string, improvise.Add a D string drone with your thumb. Magic right? Now consider that you could play any scale possible on any one string. Then we could consider paired strings. Letter, words, sentences.

The Da Vinci Codex for Guitar - NOT FOR BEGINNERS
Imagine finding the personal notebook of the one of the most advanced guitar players/teachers ever. You carefully open the dusty book, using the greatest caution to not damage the binding. Page after page of pure guitar wisdom interspersed with advanced exercises. This teacher was from an earlier time when musicians learned standard notation like every other musician so none of the precious exercises are tabbed out but you can do that yourself to mine the gold nuggets from this wise teacher's decades of study and practice. That's how I see this book. I use it for inspiration and aspiration at this time. I value its wisdom and the light it brings to my guitar studies. This is a mastery book, if you will; comprehensive food and exercise for a lifetime of playing. If you're looking for an step-wise method book, then this isn't the book for you.As others have said, this book is not for beginners. You'll need to read standard music notation or at least be able to translate for yourself between standard notation and tab to get much out of the exercises. If you know how to use GuitarPro or similar software, this is a relatively easy, if time-consuming, process. Finally, I ordered the "sheet music" version not knowing exactly what to expect. I received the regular, soft cover version of the book which is fine with me but if you're looking for loose "sheet music", what I ordered isn't that. Thank you for reading my review of this monumental book.

very very good
Rather than giving you excercises and things to learn the book gives you concepts to work with, which I think is the best way to learn music or any other subject.
