Makeba: My Story

Understanding Racial Prejudice
I remember hearing the song “Pata, Pata” as a kid. To read her incredible story, I learned so much about her like, South Africa, the music business, and even American race relations.

A Life of Purpose
Once I started to read this book, it was difficult for me to stop. I am a singer, and I can relate to Ms. Makeba.

Interesting Read
This is a historical book about South Africa and the movement to freedom as well as her life history. I found it quite good, but at times, I was not sure what the book was explaining. Maybe it was me, maybe is was the organization of the book. I heard an interview on WAMU with her one-time husband and super trumpet player, Hugh Masekela. He gave a great explanation of their troubled times when immigrating to the US and how they studied and perfected their art while maintaining their South African identity. I was interested in Apartheid and this book told one person's struggle and how she helped Nelson Mandela get free.
