Another great film by the mystro. The action was great and deserving, a bit like his Equalizer films.Well worth a second viewing.

I really enjoyed this film

Great underrated movie

I had my eye on this for a while, but waited until it came down in price due to mixed reviews. I needn't have worried.The book of Eli is a very smart story - one of the most interesting I've come across for a while, however that doesn't mean the film is without faults.Both I and my flat mate felt the film was a little slow but it did eventually pick up and the pace didn't seem to spoil our enjoyment.Set in a post apocalyptic hell-hole, this is one of many recent films to try and depict a MadMax style world after what appears to be WW3... Visually it looked very much like another film I watched not too long ago - The Road - with its bleached out colours; and for those of you who play computer games, it bore more than an uncanny resemblance to the staggering achievement that is Fall Out 3: Rise Of Man (the crumbling flyovers and dilapidated over-passes seemed to be lifted straight from the game itself). All in all the vision of life after death in the dust bowl that Earth has become is convincingly bleak, yet still visually engaging.The acting is good - Denzel is of course brilliant as usual and his acting style is very well suited to the main character, Eli. Gary Oldman makes a believable villain, although I must confess it's not his strongest performance and his accent seemed to change half way through the film.The Book Of Eli though will be remember by me for its story - I found it smart and truly touching - even choking me up at the end. Being a full time writer myself (although, alas, I must confess not in Hollywood or cinema), I thought the script was very well crafted, with little details and elements, and the background to the story seamlessly introduced as the film unfolds (in stark contrast to another film I saw not too long ago - The Happening - which felt very clunky and awkward in the manner in which the background to the catastrophe was explained).The Book of Eli is well worth a watch - fans of scorched earth type films, like the afore mentioned MadMax, should enjoy it. But be warned: this is not an all out action flick - although it does have the obligatory, guns, action scenes and home made vehicles you'd expect. No; The Book Of Eli is much more than this. It's a very clever story that just happens to be set in a world we associate with such films. However, as I just said - fans of the genre, I doubt, will be disappointed.The Book Of Eli, in fact falls somewhere in between MadMax and the Road - offering an intelligent tale to accompany the guns; something for everyone. It was not what I expected in that sense, but it's now a film I hold in high regard for its originality and I would recommend to you. It almost deserves 5 stars and the cast, the actors and of course the writer have produced a film they can all be proud of. I'd like to remind the haters that the Bible is what built the western world as we know it, and every other book—even the Lord of the Rings, as another commenter suggests, as much of a titan of literature and a personal favourite of mine Tolkien might be—would be very much insignificant by comparison."The Book of Eli" presents a story about true faith, demonstrated by our protagonist, placed against those seeking to abuse faith for their own selfish means, as seen in the antagonist. Gary Oldman in particular is fantastic in his role as the evil "mayor" of his miserable town, initially appearing almost convincingly like a regular man who is trying to improve things for his people*. That façade quickly falls away to reveal the gnarly truth underneath. As is said in Corinthians, "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." Evil often pretends it's good. (* Assuming, of course, that him reading Mussolini wasn't supposed to paint a big "I'm bad" sign on his forehead.)Denzel is also great as the tortured wanderer devoted to a higher cause, and seems a perfect fit for his role. Mila Kunis, who acts as a supporting deuteragonist, does fine with what she's given, though I'd say she seems a little too clean (literally) for this post-apocalyptic environment where all water comes at a premium. But that might just be a nitpick on my part.It has to be noted that the film features a number of surprisingly gruesome action scenes that are well shot and choreographed, the first one being almost stylised in execution, with Eli fighting a bunch of guys in the darkness under a bridge.The premise itself does require some suspension of disbelief: after "the war", all Bibles were destroyed, and Eli is the custodian of the presumably-last copy in existence. I find that hard to imagine, given that the Bible is the world's most read book. But that's okay. As for how Eli survived all his trials and tribulations... well, as Jesus said, "all things are possible to him who believes". :)Indeed, I'd posit the plot of the film is best considered metaphorically. It's about the power of faith to stand in the face of evil and triumph, even if the odds are insurmountable and all has fallen into ruin beside you. It's about rising above the evil around you, and your own self, to do something good.That said, "The Book of Eli" is not some sort of masterpiece, or some profound philosophical treatise; it's a post-apocalyptic action film with edgy violence but a slightly deeper meaning. That's all. That doesn't stop it from being very entertaining and worth a watch (and a thought).P.S.: Christ is King.

... neben der Tatsache, dass ich ihn sehr unterhaltend fand. Hierbei empfinden die Menschen - wie man an den Rezensionen hier ja auch sieht - recht unterschiedlich, je nach Weltanschauung. Ich bin selber kein Freund der Kirche, glaube auch nicht, dass es bei diesem Film ausschließlich um die Bibel als Buch geht. Klar, äußerlich betrachtet schon, aber es geht meines Erachtens am Ende doch um wesentlich mehr hierbei. Ich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass Spiritualität für den Menschen und die Menschlichkeit als solche absolut überlebensnotwendig ist; allerdings nicht in Form von dogmatischen Religionen und dergleichen. Und davon bin ich deshalb so überzeugt, weil der Mensch immer wieder danach verlangt, da er ein spirituelles Wesen ist, und eben nicht bloß ein toter materieller Mechanismus oder eine geistlose Chemie-Fabrik. Wenn dem nicht so wäre, wäre alle Spiritualität längst ausgestorben; tatsächlich nimmt sie aber gerade durch den die Seelen verödenden modernen Materialismus wieder zu. Die alles entscheidende Frage ist doch, was schafft die Grundlagen für wirkliche Menschlichkeit und Moral? Und dazu muss man das Leben und den Menschen tatsächlich anschauen und erkennen können, anstatt in Abstraktionen, Vorlieben, Theorien oder Programmen zu denken. Der Materialismus wird am Ende immer zur Unmenschlichkeit und zu immer neueren Formen und Maskeraden des Faschismus führen müssen; auch wenn der Zeitgeist momentan mal wieder ganz entgegengesetzte Vorurteile schafft. Wer ernsthaft glaubt, dass Menschlichkeit überleben kann in einer Gott- und geistlosen Welt, der täuscht sich gewaltig und weiß nichts Reales vom Wesen des Menschen. Wenn der Weltanschauungsmaterialismus in uns allen wirklich einmal komplett platz greifen sollte, wenn wir alle irgendwann restlos davon überzeugt sind, dass wir nur Tiere, nur ein Zufallsprodukt der Evolution, dass es keinen höheren Sinn des Lebens gibt, vor allem keinen moralischen, dass Materialismus und Geistlosigkeit "Aufklärung oder Intelligenz" sind, wenn also die Menschheit einmal tatsächlich bis tief in die Seele hinein endgültig gottlos geworden ist, dann wird auch vollkommene Lieblosigkeit unter den meisten Menschen herrschen, und der Eine wird der Wolf des Anderen sein. Daran habe ich persönlich keinen Zweifel, denn Herz und Seele ernähren sich durch den lebendigen Geist, und wer sich hier zu lange aushungert, dem geht irgendwann ganz notwendig auch die moralische Puste aus und das Tier siegt in ihm. (Und mit Geist meine ich ganz sicher nie leeres intellektuelles Gepolter! Materialistischer Intellekt zeichnet sich durch Geistlosigkeit, Hochmut und Vorurteil aus, echter Geist gerade durch Demut, Offenheit und Lernwilligkeit.) Natürlich lässt sich auch Gott, als leere Worthülse für alles mögliche tyrannisch missbrauchen, das ist mir völlig klar! Religionen sind heute meistens auch bloß noch raffiniert versklavende Masken der Menschenverachtung, und sie schrecken nach Freiheit strebende Menschen natürlich ab, weshalb gerade die toten Religionen den Materialismus heute eher noch vorantreiben. Aber ehrliche Spiritualität erweckt den höheren Menschen in uns und öffnet unsere Seele! Hier gießen zu viele gerne immer wieder in ihrer Oberflächlichkeit das Kind mit dem Bade aus. Nur weil die Kirchen oder Religionen nicht überzeugen, sind doch nicht automatisch Atheismus und Materialismus wahr! Wenn in einer gottlosen Weltanschauung am Ende Moral nichts weiter mehr ist, als eine "nützliche Illusion", wenn wir alle mit unseren Idealen im Grunde im Nichts wurzeln und bloßen Schimären hinterher laufen, da ja angeblich nichts von uns bleibt nach dem Tode (was übrigens ein großer Irrtum ist), dann werden ganz viele irgendwann auch entsprechend leben. Das geschieht heute bereits vielerorts; außerdem haben es entsprechende politische Systeme in der Geschichte oft genug belegt. Noch mal! Mir geht es nicht um Machtinstitutionen, wie die Kirche, nicht einmal wirklich um den so genannten "frommen Glauben" - denn es gibt auch wissenschaftlichere Wege zum Spirituellen, wenn man nicht mit Brettern völlig vernagelt ist - sondern um unser grundsätzliches Welt und Menschenverständnis und unsere Haltung zum Leben. Wir werden irgendwann IMMER auch unserer Weltanschauung gemäß leben, alles wird irgendwann irgendwo praktisch. Was haben die Nazis am Ende bitte denn anderes getan, als den Darwinismus praktisch zu machen? Der Rassismus und Materialismus Charles Darwins war einer von vielen Erziehern zum Nationalsozialismus, und der pseudo-religiöse Zirkus der Nazis diente nur zur Manipulation der Massen. Der Nationalsozialismus war ein geistiges Kind des roten Sozialismus, Bolschewismus und des würdelosen Menschenbildes des Materialismus. Und auch unser moderner, sich als "wissenschaftlich", "aufgeklärt" oder "fortschrittlich" ansehender Materialismus, wird sich bitter rächen und irgendwann moralisch am Menschen entsprechend auswüten. Die meisten Menschen haben ihren Ursprung glücklicherweise noch nicht völlig vergessen. Deshalb glauben laut Statistik angeblich 80% der Menschen zumindest an ein Leben nach dem Tode. Wer wirklich nachforsch mit offenem Geist und sich eben nicht zu schnell mit materialistischen oder religiösen Vorurteilen zufrieden gibt, der findet auch den Geist und den wahren Menschen, wenn er denn wirklich sucht und ernsthaft will. Viele Menschen suchen heute aber nur noch nach Bestätigung für ihre Vorurteile, und nicht aufrichtig nach Wahrheit; deshalb scheitern sie. Letztendlich geht es bei diesem Film um den Geist als Grundlage der Welt und wahrer Menschlichkeit. Deshalb wird Eli geschützt, und am Ende hat selbst das junge Mädchen keine Angst mehr und ist fest entschlossen.Ich weiß sehr wohl, wie unpopulär ein geistiges Weltbild heute ist! Ich weiß nur zu gut, was heute allgemein als Intelligenz gilt! Die Evangelien, die mal eben von der Menschwerdung des 2. Logos in Jesus von Nazareth erzählen, werden heute vom materialistisch abgestumpften Denken kaum mehr begriffen. Das Gebot der Nächstenliebe, welches Eli im Film auf seine Weise nach dem Verlust des Buches definiert, ist manchen heute bereits sogar "platt". ... Dazu möchten ich abschließend sagen: Wer ernsthaft glaubt, dass eine Welt ohne den Geist und ohne Gott moralisch gesunde Menschen hervor bringt, der wird es wohl wirklich erst an der eigenen Seele erfahren müssen, was Gottlosigkeit in Wahrheit bedeutet; er wird wohl erst selbst die Hölle erfahren müssen, damit er anfängt, aufrichtig den Himmel zu suchen. Und die Hölle der Lieblosigkeit zeichnet dieser Film streckenweise schon ganz treffend. Natürlich reicht dieses Argument allein nicht aus zum Anerkennen des Geistes! Dazu braucht es selbstverständlich mehr, und es gibt auch mehr zur Erkenntnis, aber es ist und bleibt die entscheidende Wahrheit unserer Existenz, dass der Mensch ein geistig-spirituelles Wesen ist, das von Gott kommt und zu Gott strebt, die sich zu viele heute bloß viel zu leicht zubuttern lassen. Leider lernen wir nicht wirklich von den vorherigen Generationen, wir müssen unsere Erfahrungen immer selber machen. Lernen tun die meisten Menschen wirklich nur, indem sie die Früchte ihrer eigenen Überzeugungen selber ernten. -Michael Kiske
