This pen is fantastic! An excellent writing instrument
Function: 10/10I usually write with a Lamy Vista, but this pen is in a different league. Although from the BASIC range, the quality of the nib is amazing. This medium nib writes finer than the Lamy Vista fine nib. It feels great to hold and write with excellent ink flow. The only thing I 'll need to get used to is that this pen has a bit of weight to it, more at the rear end, due to its metal construction.Design: 8.5/10Body: the carbon fibre pattern looks stunning, probably the best looking one in the BASIC range.Cap: the main reason some people don't like the Basic range. It is hefty and frankly speaking, ugly, compared to the rest of the pen. It's made of very light plastic and pops when you pull open, sometimes smudges a bit of ink onto the grip. Really wish the cap was better designed.

A Fine Pen.
A nicely made, reasonably priced fountain pen. Good looks, good balance, pleasant materials to hold. The fine nib is finer than some brands, but this means that the range of nibs I own is now even broader, and a fine nib means ink goes even further and letters can be distinctly formed. I found that a good lubricated ink such as Noodlers solved what I thought was a scratchy nib at first, and now I'm very happy with this pen. It's a shame it has been given the name BASIC as it can detract from a perfectly acceptable writing instrument. Be sure that a fine nib is what you want,as there appears to be no option on this model to buy other nibs, as there is on models higher up the range.

Great pen, watch durability
Lovely pen in terms of look and writing. This was a replacement for one that broke - the carbon fibre snapped after a few months. Thankfully, this was has lasted a lot longer

Silky writing experience, works perfectly with Ink Converter
The pen has a nice weight to it and the carbon fibre has a warm, lacquered feel to it. After using cheaper fountain pens for years and getting annoyed at the scratchiness of them, this is a dream to use.I was concerned about the feeling of the nib section, but their choice of rubber is ideal, you get a nice grip without too much friction.I am using it with the ink converter and have no complaints.

great balance
I guess that is you are seriously looking at this product you have seen the YouTube reviews by such revered characters as sbrebrown. This review is excellent, however I would add that the carbon version of this pen has an excellent balance. It is not a light pen, however without the thick metal barrel of other versions it is a joy to write with. As with all Faber Castell fountain pens in my experience the nib is very smooth, there is a small hint of feedback with the basic pen, just letting you know you are in contact with the page. This pen is lovely to write with I highly recommend it to any penthusiast or otherwise.

Lovely design, but has a fatal flaw
This is a relatively heavy pen, and a delight to use. The nib is stiff, but smooth and it writes well. However, as others have noted, the pen has a real structural weakness, which is that the lower body, where the finger grip is, has a tendency to split, rendering the pen useless. I bought two pens as gifts and one was dropped just six inches or so on to a table. Within days the body had split and could not be repaired. The second pen is still going. Be warned, however, without very careful handling, the shaft will fail. A shame, as this is a handsome pen from a prestigious maker.

Smooth writing and good finishing for a very affordable fountain pen
Smooth writing and good finishing for a very affordable fountain pen. I had one of the affordable of Cross and the lacquer fell apart in a couple of years, from this same collection I had a pen for almost a decade and the lacquer is still perfect. I am hoping the same for the fountain pen. Although I like a bit more the converter of Cross that screw with the pen but it's not better or worse, they are just different.

excellent but fragile
The pen is excellent at writing (after all...) BUT this is my third. They are too easy to snap in half when trying to get the cap off. I suppose the fact that it is my third tells you that I really like the writing action, but, come on, Faber-Castell, the pen design is fragile

Fantastic
Ordered this pen. Received an Essentio Carbon with fine nib. Looks exactly the same. Amazing smooth nib. Section is warm and comfortable. Great balance!!! Need to order the cartridge converter- it’s not includedThis pen is AMAZING. Rivals some pens 10-20x more expensive

Poor packaging
Great pen, but it doesn't come in the fancy box shown in the pictures. The nib is slightly scratchier than expected for the price.

trusty writer
As all other Faber-Castell nibs, this is excellent. Some might find them stiff, but they're smooth, reliable writers. This Basic has become my go to pen ... always ready to go, from the first stroke and it's good for lengthier writing sessions, thanks to its comfortable grip section. It has a certain weight to it, which makes it sit nicely in the hand. I use mine with a converter and bottled ink, but it takes long international cartridges, such as Edelstein.
