The Great American Songbook Box Set

All the discs are absolutely fantastic, the box set comes with extras and makes a lovely present, we got one for Dad on his birthday and he loves it

It was a present for my partner who loves it so it’s always on in the car

Great value for money great content

We first heard these recordings when on holiday in Madeira at Christmas 2019. We were in a charming restaurant, and the music was very pleasant. I commented to the waitress, and asked who was the singer - it didn't recognise the woman. "Oh, no!" she said - "it is Rod Stewart!". I couldn't believe it and so she recovered the CD from a back room and bought it for me to see. It *was* Rod Stewart. Once I knew, I suppose I could sometimes recognise a slight raspiness for which he is so well known, but the majority of tracks sere sung with a beautiful - to me - female voice. All these tracks are the well known songs of old, and are beautifully rendered - so much so that I also purchased Volume 5 separately! If you like the standards by the great American composers, I cannot recommend this box set (and Volume 5) strongly enough - we play them almost every day!

This turned into an impressive 8 year project for Rod Stewart whose mellow voice suits these songs brilliantly. The set contains 4 of the albums. The only disappointment is that I had to buy the later released fifth album and best of album later.Sinatra or Buble would be proud of this collection.Rod gives the songs his unique style and this works wonderfully well. He also collaborates with other artists on some tracks such as Cher, Bette Midler and Dolly Parton to name a few.The arrangements are also very good.For 4 albums this is great value. One quibble is that although the box containing the disks and notation is good it is difficult to put the disks back easily without them being loose.Highly recommended.

I could never have imagined that I would be so enthusiastic about these recordings. How, I wondered, could Rod Stewart's rather gravelly voice cope with these classic and rather sophisticated songs which I love but which present a challenge to many singers? How wrong can you be! I absolutely love all the numbers, and almost without exception the backing is superb. These songs really lift your spirits on a grey day and I have come to appreciate Rod Stewart's voice even more in these CDs than on the type of songs with which he is usually associated. Four wonderful CDs
