A Piece Of Young Women's History
I had Onyx, Golden Girl, and Jade when I was little. I've also had the jingle in my head for years. Because people only remembered the NBC sitcom about the elderly women living together in Florida, I got blank stares when I told them there was a 'warrior-princesses' toy line during the 1980's also called Golden Girls.I had no idea that these toys had a TV show--yes, otherwise I would have watched it. What obviously did these ladies in was not having 'something' to successfully promote the product line. She-ra could say she was 'He-man's reformed and long-lost sister'. But who were these ladies---and what exactly was their mission? Were they warriors single-handedly capable of saving the world? Or fashion dolls, who looked strikingly awesome in evening wear? The series was also marketed with evening gowns, because these women were supposed to go out for a night after doing battle (seriously). But curiously, there was only one male colleague in the line up. So it subconsciously, brings up a question of just whom the Golden Girls were expected to enjoy the evening off with. Ahh, the joys of multi-tasking.In today's Xena-Buffy impacted world, this line might have stood a chance for longer term production. It was just created ahead of it's time.
