Golden Pass Dvd, By Train from Lucerne to Montreux DvdBy John Cocking. The Golden Pass is one of Switzerland's most gentle travel concepts. It is a journey by rail that in both winter & summer the 253 kilometres between the city of Lucerne on the shore of the Vierwaldstattersee to Montreux on the bank of Lac Leman reveal the country in all its perfection. Lakes, rivers, alpine meadows & towering mountains in profusion are all paraded before the traveller. This dvd explores the whole route together with several side trips. The most notable of these is to the very 'top of Europe' at Jungfraujoch, 3454 metres above sea level. The journey begins in Zurich, one of the 'gateways' to the Golden Pass (the other is Geneva where the dvd ends). The Golden Pass itself begins in Lucerne but there is time to look at the city & climb the Pilatus & Rigi mountains before setting off on the metre gauge line over Brunig Pass to Interlaken. The tiny train winds its way over the mountains to that wonderful town between the lakes of Brienz and Thun. The journey is interrupted in Interlaken to travel the Jungfrau & Schynige Platte railways & a visit is also made to the famous Schilthorn. The onward journey is by a train of the Bern-Lotschberg-Simplon Railway beside Lake Thun & then along the Simmen Valley to Zweisimmen where a return is made to the narrow gauge. This time it’s the wonderful blue & white trains of the Montreux-Oberland Bernois Railway which awaits you & the final part of the Golden Pass to Montreux is as stunning as anything which has gone before. Mountains and flower strewn pastures flash past the large windows of the Panoramic Express which, at last, plunges through the mountains to emerge high above the sparkling waters of Lac Leman. The town of Montreux is far below, first on one side of the train and then the other as the twisting descent is made. Narration by Martin Oldfield.
