Death Proof (Two-Disc Edition) [DVD]

Surprisingly great
I read recently that Quentin Tarantino slated Death Proof as the worst movie he ever made which is also a sentiment shared by many audiences, I for the life of me do not understand that and really enjoyed it. I am a fan of Tarantino, I was a huge fan when I was younger and loved Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction (which has been overkilled), Jackie Brown was ok, Kill Bill 1&2 has and will age the best while still maintaining Tarantinos positive hallmarks and inglorious Basterds for me would be his best if it weren't for the soundtrack, Death Proof for me has the most 're-watchability'Death Proof has all the nuances of a 70's exploitation film, it only has 3 real scenes of an exploitation film but the retro 70's look and feel is there but it's set in modern day with some references and phones being the only give away. I think this film didn't do better because is because apart from the group dialogue it doesn't feel very 'Tarantino' but that shouldn't put any movie fans off, also I think his audience was put off because his films are usually very male centric (kill Bill and Jackie Brown are kind of exceptions, but not really) all the main characters in this apart from antagonist Kurt Russell playing 'stuntman Mike' are women. I'll say that film fans should get this and Tarantino should have a think about it.

One of Tarantino's Best, Though I Heard He Thinks it's His Worst
I love this film. I heard it was terrible and that Tarantino ranks it as his worst, but I don't know why. I've seen it three times now and I'm sure I'll watch it again at some point.I don't know how to describe it. It reminds me most of Thelma and Louise! It's a little difficult to describe it without giving away important plot points. If you love Tarantino films, I don't know why you wouldn't like this. If you find yourself 20 mins in and thinking, what the hell is happening?? just keep going, though it may be if you're not sucked into it and ask this question you won't like the rest. I was transfixed for the whole thing. What's it about? It's about girlfriends having a good time who are stalked by a lunatic stuntman who specialises in car stunts. That's all I can say.I doubt you will have seen anything like it! Perhaps if you loved Thelma and Louise you will love this also, though being a Tarantino fan will help.

When a Stuntman Calls
American film critic Manny Farber once described the auteur theory thusly: "A bunch of guys standing around trying to catch some director pushing art up into the crevices of dreck." That quote perfectly suits Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, an eccentric tribute to exploitation films which was first released as one half of Grindhouse, Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror providing the other half. Removed from that context and presented as a standalone work Death Proof feels like two films sewn together, not least because its first act is shot using grainy, scratched film - an homage to low-budget sleazoid movies - while its second has the crisp, sharp colours of modern cinema. Personally I like this jump in styles; there's also a black-and-white segment, and one of the joys of Tarantino's films is their experiments with technique, whether it's through non-linear narratives or varied visuals. The plot, as befitting a slasher, is very simple. Two quartets of women cross paths with Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell), a psychopath who kills by causing highway collisions in his "death proof" car. The second group, including stuntwomen Kim (Tracie Thoms) and Zoe (Zoe Bell) and make-up artist Abernathy (Rosario Dawson), fight back when he attacks them.Rose McGowan, who starred in Planet Terror, shows up here too as a bar patron who befriends Mike, and Sydney Tamiia Poitier (Sidney Poitier's daughter) plays a radio DJ; Vanessa Ferlito, Jordan Ladd and Mary Elizabeth Winstead round out the main cast. Kurt Russell gives a good performance as Mike, an ageing stuntman. The character feels like a leftover from an old world. When he asks McGowan how she thinks car crashes are filmed she says CGI; he recalls an age where they were real, no digital trickery involved. He's not especially deep or poignant, but he's interesting. He represents a tension between old and new cinema, an age of realism and an age of special effects. This is where you can catch Tarantino "shoving art up into the crevices of dreck": shallow and sadistic as he is, Mike works in a metaphorical way which would have been above the slasher killers of yore. Jason Voorhees was just a mute in a mask. The women are enjoyable; I liked the sense of friendship between them which Tarantino's script conveys. Thoms and Bell, who's essentially playing herself (she's a stuntwoman in real life), are delightful. Thoms is a sassy blaxploitation heroine, Bell's her Kiwi colleague. Their meeting with Mike ends in a thrilling twenty minute car chase which uses music and editing to perfection. Death Proof may not be Tarantino's smartest or thematically richest film, but it's a damn entertaining thrill ride across America.

Terrific Tarantino!
I adore Tarantino's films and this one is up there with any of them. It's dark, yet has several comic moments, the dialogue is both sinister and clever, the acting is superb and the filming first class. The ending is completely unpredictable and shocking and fabulous! At first, you may be forgiven for thinking this is just a rehashed plot of a crazed killer, killing girls in an imaginative way, but don't be fooled.Kirt Russell makes an impressive, but ultimately cowardly, Bad Guy.Watch and enjoy.

Slow to get going
Very slow to start. The first 'action' is 40 minutes in. Up to that it is more like a High School romp. Then it is only at the end of the film that it picks up again. In my opinion, not one of Tarantino's best efforts. Fairly ludicrous plot (all his films probably are) about an (for some reason) aggrieved stuntman (Kurt Russell) who pursues young girls in his stunt 'death proof' car and kills them in horrific crashes. In the end he gets his come uppances but overall the film is very short on action - from my point of view.

Great Soundtrack and Acting...
Interesting to watch as a separate movie but best watched as the Grindhouse Feature. Great retro movie looking into the heart of 70's 'b' movies. Kurt Russell is brilliant in this movie and there is only one thing greater than he, the sound track which is impressive. If you love and action movieyou can't miss this! Its bullet for the modern masses

Amazon impeccabile
