what you wanted to know
This book was written to explain the origins of things written about in the Dragonriders of Pern trilogy. I really enjoyed the book-it has all of the Anne McCaffrey magic

A great read
It's almost impossible to tell Todd McCaffrey's writing from Marian McCaffrey's. The only difference between the two that I've been able to determine is that Mr. McCaffrey has a tendency to use an annoying amount of sentence fragments as well as an occasional use of colons where it would have been more appropriate to use semicolons.

Pern is Here; the Dragons are Here; Now All We Need Is a Plot...
I'm sorry to say that this book isn't one I can recommend to anyone. It's not bad; but there's certainly no new material. We don't meet new characters or learn of an ancient bit of Pern's history. We're introduced to a few rather bland individuals, and how they PERIPHERALLY interact with dragons and riders. None of those interactions proves to be particularly interesting; I came to the end of the book, and found myself wondering, "Why did she even bother writing this?" There's just NOTHING this book tells me that I didn't already know and/or hadn't already learned from some other (better!!!) of McCaffrey Volume. Save your money...!Disappointing.

Superb, as always...
and finally, we learn about the second Threadfall, and how the starstones came into being. I would have liked more about the Starstones, yet there is SO much history that gets explained, that is a minor issue. We see the birth of the Harperhall and the Teaching Ballads! The weyrs face the first Thread after the first Interval, and while most of the population believes Thread is returning, there is one Lord Holder that does not. We see the beginning of Pern's justice system being given its first test, and are told some of the punishments meted out as sentences for various crimes. There is a lot going on in this book, the colonists are losing much of the tech that arrived with them, such as; the abacus and Stonehenge were both useful in lieu of the items that are no longer operational. Some day, I will read through the series in a chronological order...maybe. LOLDragonseye is a great read. The characters are well done, some you will boo, others you will cheer, and as always, there are the dragons. The fire lizards do not make an appearance, although they are mentioned. ✌😸

Great series
I enjoyed reading this book and all the other s a this series. I read it years ago when Anne McCaffrey was alive and still writing. I recommend it to anyone who likes dragons.

GREAT BOOK, but should only be read in consecutive order behind the books before it in the series.
This book in the PERN series details how important the Harpers of HarperHall are to the planet's survival. Without them the population of the planet would forget how important it is to keep supporting the voracious, long-lived dragons and their riders through the 200 years between threadfall. It also gives insights into how the dragons are raised and trained by their riders, from their escape from cracked shelled eggs to their place in society as full-grown protectors of the planet. The book shows how just one nonbeliever can create havoc and nearly bring down the planet's defenses when not held in check. McCaffrey, once again, accomplishes all this in a book that has the reader fully engrossed in what he/she can plainly see is a scientifically plausible future for residents of our planet earth should they ever venture out into the galaxy. Yes, newbies to McCaffrey's work will discover it is all plausible. As McCaffrey shows in her first book, DragonsDawn, the dragons are truly plausible in the way they were created by earth's scientists from a small lizard originally found on the planet.Again, GREAT BOOK, but should only be read in consecutive order behind the books before it in the series.

Solving a few of those mysteries
In this book, Dragonseye (aka Red Star Rising, the Second Chronicle of Pern), you meet up with familiar attitudes. Close to the second pass (about 250 years after the colonists landed) Chalkin, a Lord Holder of Brita Hold, is abusing his responsibility to his hold and refuses to prepare for Threadfall. The Weyrleaders and many other holders are trying to do what they can to overrun his authority. Unfortunately you need a unanimous vote to impeach a Lord Holder, and some don't believe the stories. Artist Iantine may offer a solution, but can they save Brita Hold in time? This book answers some questions like:Where did the firelizards go? And why don't the people still have them, since the colonists had them? When did computers disappear and why?Why didn't the people go and find AVIAS after the dust had settled? How did the Star Stones get to be?When and why did the teaching methods go from teachers to harpers? If you are looking for old and familiar characters, you will be disappointed. I would recommend starting with a book that is later on in time, so you will get familiar faces and characters that you will see over and over again, not like the one time only characters in this book. The first book anyone should read is Dragonsflight.
